Investment thesis
Greylock positions itself as an early conviction investor, backing founders and outlier companies before markets exist. Emphasizing depth over volume, each partner makes only one or two new investments a year, dedicating their full attention, network, and resources to each partnership. Bill Elfers founded Greylock in 1965, naming it after the street where he lived. After working for Georges Doriot at American Research & Development, he built a firm emphasizing collegiality and partnership, and led investments in companies such as Teradyne and The Shipley Company.
Charlie Waite joined Greylock in 1966 from American Research and Development and helped build companies such as Prime Computer, Apollo Computer Systems and Physio-Control. He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut and Harvard Business School.
Daniel S. Gregory co-founded Greylock in Boston in 1965 and served as its second managing partner and Chairman of the Board. He led investments in companies including Teradyne and Genetics Institute, served on the NVCA board, and briefly left the firm to serve as Massachusetts Secretary of Economic Affairs.
Howard Cox joined Greylock in 1971 and served as past Chairman of the NVCA. He has served on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards including Stryker and In-Q-Tel. He holds degrees from Princeton, Columbia Law and Harvard Business School.
Neiman Mathew previously worked at Schmidt Futures on the AI for Science fund, where he helped identify and philanthropically fund ambitious AI-for-science datasets and research projects. Before that, he experimented with materials science, including room-temperature superconductors and supercapacitors, and began building AI in 2021. He tends to start working with founders before they formally start companies, helping them develop ideas and de-risk assumptions.
Roger Evans joined Greylock after serving as CEO of Micom Systems, a Greylock-backed company he co-founded in 1976. He led investments in networking and communications companies including Ascend, RightNow Technologies and Xircom. He is a graduate of Cambridge University.
Jason Risch is a Partner at Greylock who invests in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. He studied math as an undergraduate and statistics as a graduate student at Stanford, where he was introduced to machine learning, and earlier joined an AI-focused incubator in 2018 applying AI to industries such as agriculture and logistics. He focuses on backing founders building around foundational AI models and cybersecurity technologies.
Mustafa Suleyman has co-founded two of the defining AI companies of the century and now runs a third effort inside the largest software company in the world. He started DeepMind in 2010 with Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg — Google bought it in 2014 for a reported £400 million — and Inflection AI in 2022 with Reid Hoffman, which raised $1.3 billion before Microsoft paid roughly $650 million to license its technology and hire its team. Since March 2024 he has been CEO of Microsoft AI, where he leads the MAI Superintelligence Team and shipped seven in-house frontier models in 2026. He is a CBE, a founding co-chair of the Partnership on AI, and the author of The Coming Wave.
Dave Strohm joined Greylock in 1980 and opened the firm's west coast office in 1983. He led investments in companies such as DoubleClick, OpenDNS, Legato Systems and SuccessFactors. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Harvard Business School.
David Thacker serves as Vice President of Product at Google DeepMind. His career includes product management roles at high-growth technology companies, investment experience, and advisory work across companies at various stages from early-stage startups to large-scale operations.
James Slavet is a founder, investor, and operating executive who established THE SOLID FOUNDATION. He serves on the boards of GoFundMe, Lyra Health, Redfin, and Solv, and is involved with Fast Forward, an accelerator focused on technology non-profits. David Sze joined Greylock in 2000 and led the firm's defining consumer bets, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Pandora, Roblox and Discord, serving as senior managing partner from 2012 to 2017. He has since transitioned to advisory partner, continuing to sit on boards including Discord and Nextdoor while stepping back from new investing.
Glenn Kelman is the long-time CEO of Redfin, a real estate brokerage built on technology. Earlier in his career, he co-founded the enterprise software company Plumtree Software, which went public and was later acquired by Oracle Corporation.
Asheem Chandna is a partner at Greylock, which he joined in 2003, investing in enterprise, cybersecurity, and infrastructure software companies at the earliest stages. He began his career as an electrical and computer engineer, working in product architecture at Bell Labs before moving into product management roles at SynOptics and Check Point Software.
