Onehouse

Onehouse was founded in 2021 by Vinoth Chandar, a distributed-systems and database engineer whose career spans Oracle's database server team (streaming and data replication), LinkedIn (the Voldemort NoSQL key-value store), Uber, and Confluent. Chandar studied at Anna University in India before earning a degree at the University of Texas at Austin. While at Uber beginning around 2014-2016, he confronted the challenge of running warehouse-like, fast, consistent analytics on top of Uber's massive, fast-growing, unstructured data lake. To solve this he built an internal project that became Apache Hudi ('Hadoop Upserts Deletes and Incrementals'), which brought database-like transactional semantics (ACID transactions, upserts, incremental processing) to data lakes -- widely credited as pioneering the 'transactional data lake' / lakehouse category. Uber donated Hudi to the Apache Software Foundation as an open-source project (sources place this at 2017-2019; Apache Hudi became a full Apache Top-Level Project in 2020). Chandar became the founding PMC chair of Apache Hudi. He left Uber in 2019, had a brief stint at Confluent, and then founded Onehouse to build a commercial, fully-managed cloud service around Hudi and the broader open lakehouse ecosystem.

Onehouse emerged from stealth in February 2022, revealing an $8 million Seed round co-led by Greylock Partners and Addition, with the company having grown to 15 employees. One year later, in February 2023, it announced a $25 million Series A, again co-led by Greylock and Addition, bringing total funding to $33 million and roughly doubling headcount to 30. The company's strategy at this stage emphasized being a 'neutral' integration layer across data lake table formats rather than competing head-on with Databricks or Snowflake. In 2023, Onehouse (with Microsoft and Google) open-sourced OneTable, later contributed to the Apache Software Foundation as Apache XTable (incubating), enabling interoperability across Hudi, Iceberg, and Delta Lake table formats -- reflecting Chandar's 'no vendor lock-in' thesis. Onehouse was named to The Information's 'most promising startups of 2023' and CRN's '10 Hottest Big Data Startups of 2023.'

In June 2024, Onehouse raised a $35 million Series B led by Craft Ventures (David Sacks' firm; partner Michael Robinson led the deal), with existing investors Addition and Greylock Partners participating, bringing total funding to $68 million. This round funded the launch of two new products: Onehouse LakeView (a free lakehouse observability tool) and Table Optimizer (a managed service for automated table clustering, compaction, and cleaning). The company also disclosed partnerships with AWS and Confluent. Onehouse continued to ship rapidly through 2024-2025: a Vector Embeddings Generator for GenAI/vector workloads (August 2024), the Onehouse Compute Runtime (rebranded 'Quanton'), a proprietary Spark/SQL execution engine claimed to deliver up to 30x faster lakehouse queries at roughly 4x cost-performance versus stock Apache Spark (January 2025), and Open Engines, offering managed Trino and Ray clusters directly on lakehouse data (April 2025).

Onehouse sells a fully-managed data lakehouse platform (deployable in a customer's own cloud VPC or as a hosted service) built on open-source Apache Hudi, Apache Iceberg, Delta Lake and Apache XTable, monetizing via usage-based/subscription pricing for its managed ingestion, optimization, compute (Quanton) and interoperability (OneSync) services, while also offering free tools (LakeView, Spark Analyzer) as a funnel from its open-source user base.
