Company profile
researched Aug 2026Espresso Systems (legal name Translucence Research, Inc.) was founded in 2020 by four Stanford-connected researchers and operators: Ben Fisch and Benedikt Bünz, applied-cryptography PhD students in Dan Boneh's lab at Stanford; Charles Lu, a Stanford PhD student and founder of the Stanford Blockchain Club; and Jill Gunter, a former crypto investor at Slow Ventures. The company raised a small ~$2M seed round in November 2020 led by Polychain Capital, with participation from Alameda Research, Coinbase Ventures, Gemini Frontier Fund, Paxos and Terraform Labs, and angels Balaji Srinivasan and Meltem Demirors. It stayed in stealth mode building a privacy-and-scalability-focused layer-1 (built around a smart-contract privacy product called CAPE, Configurable Asset Privacy for Ethereum, and a cryptography library called Jellyfish/PLONK) until March 7, 2022, when it publicly launched alongside a $29.9M (widely reported as $30M) Series A co-led by Greylock Partners and Electric Capital, with Sequoia Capital, Blockchain Capital and Slow Ventures also participating. Greylock partner Seth Rosenberg led that investment and joined the board.
Over 2022–2023 the company's strategy shifted from being its own standalone layer-1 toward becoming shared infrastructure that other rollups and L2s plug into — a 'shared sequencer' and confirmation layer. In January 2023, zkSync announced it was integrating Espresso's technology to enable private transactions, one of its earliest major ecosystem integrations. In March 2024, Espresso closed a $28M Series B led by a16z crypto (negotiations opened in Q4 2023), bringing cumulative disclosed funding to roughly $60M; the company was, at the time, still in the process of closing with additional strategic investors and did not disclose a valuation. The product had by then evolved into a marketplace for shared sequencing: rollups can designate Espresso as their default sequencer or auction sequencing rights to third parties, with HotShot (Espresso's custom BFT consensus protocol) providing fast block finality and Tiramisu serving as the data-availability layer for sovereign rollups.
Espresso launched 'Mainnet 0' in November 2024 with a permissioned set of 100 nodes, then upgraded to a permissionless proof-of-stake 'Mainnet 1' in Q1 2026, at which point validators began staking the network's native ESP token as economic security. The ESP token subsequently listed and, as of mid-to-late August 2026, trades around $0.08 with a circulating market cap in the ~$50M range and a fully diluted valuation in the ~$290M range (CoinGecko). Throughout 2025 and 2026 the company expanded its integration footprint and product line: Arbitrum Nitro and Optimism-stack integrations, an Arbitrum Orbit chain (ApeChain) integration in October 2025, 'Caff Nodes' for crosschain composability, the launch of 'Presto' (a bridgeless, one-click crosschain payments product) in December 2025, a claimed 2-second finality benchmark on an internal devnet in December 2025, membership in the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust in April 2026, an integration with LitVM (Litecoin-related VM) for finality in April/June 2026, a SNARK-proving speed record ('Flock,' co-created with Succinct and NYU researchers) in June 2026, a mainnet 'Epoch Rewards' upgrade in July 2026, and a transaction-ordering technology partnership with Offchain Labs (the team behind Arbitrum) around August 2026.
Business model
Protocol/infrastructure company that operates the Espresso Network (a public, decentralized confirmation/sequencing layer secured by a permissionless proof-of-stake validator set) and licenses/integrates the underlying technology (HotShot consensus, Tiramisu DA, Caff Nodes, Presto) with rollups, L2s and app-chains.
Not fully disclosed; network activity is denominated in the ESP token (launched ~Feb 2026), with node operators staking ESP to validate and presumably earning a share of network/sequencing fees; company itself may also generate revenue from enterprise custom-chain deployments and integration services.

Profile (continued)
Espresso positions itself in the crowded 'decentralized/shared sequencer' and modular-rollup infrastructure category, competing most directly with Astria (a Celestia-ecosystem shared sequencer) and Radius (an encrypted-mempool sequencing layer), and overlapping in parts of its roadmap with rollup-as-a-service providers such as AltLayer (which is also listed among Espresso's investors on Crunchbase) and with the broader 'based rollup' design pattern that uses Ethereum L1 proposers directly instead of a dedicated sequencing layer. CEO Ben Fisch (also formerly a Yale computer science professor) has publicly framed 2026 as a period of consolidation among general-purpose L2/sequencing projects, positioning Espresso's specialized rollup-infrastructure focus as a survivor of that shakeout.
Go-to-market
Rollup and L2/L3 teams (Arbitrum Orbit chains, Optimism-stack chains, zk-rollups), EVM app-chain builders, bridges/exchanges, and DeFi protocols seeking fast finality and crosschain composability.
