Coda

Coda was founded in June 2014 by Shishir Mehrotra and Alex DeNeui, two MIT graduates who had worked together previously and who spent roughly three years building the product quietly before emerging from stealth. Mehrotra, who became CEO, had spent six years at Microsoft before joining Google, where he served as YouTube's Chief Product Officer and CTO; he has said the idea for Coda traced back to watching how YouTube's own teams stitched together Google Docs and Sheets to run a multibillion-dollar business, and to trying to explain a spreadsheet to his six-year-old daughter. DeNeui co-founded the company as VP of Engineering. Coda's pitch was that the boundary between documents, spreadsheets and applications was artificial: a single canvas, starting from a blank page and a blinking cursor, could incorporate tables that reference each other, formulas that operate on more than just cells, and interactive buttons/automations — letting any team "make a doc as powerful as an app." Coda operates as "Coda" within Superhuman, Inc. (formerly Grammarly, Inc.), following Grammarly's 2025 acquisition of Coda and subsequent rebrand of the parent entity to Superhuman.

Business model

B2B SaaS sold to teams and enterprises, with a freemium self-serve entry point (individual/small-team free tier) and paid Pro/Team/Enterprise tiers for larger organizations, plus an ecosystem of third-party integrations ("Packs") and a Pack-developer grant/monetization program.

Subscription software licensing (per-"doc maker" seat-based pricing historically), supplemented by enterprise contracts; exact current pricing is set by parent company Superhuman/Grammarly and not independently disclosed post-acquisition.
