Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Builder.io was founded in 2018 (its core npm package was first published in August 2018; the product publicly launched in 2019) by Steve Sewell and Brent Locks, who met working together on web engineering at ShopStyle, an e-commerce fashion company. At ShopStyle they were early adopters of 'headless' architecture — decoupling front-end from back-end — but found themselves overwhelmed by non-developer requests to make small page and content changes, a bottleneck with no good tooling to solve it. Builder.io was created to let marketers, product managers, and designers build and edit real pages and content visually, using existing components, without waiting on engineering, while still producing code developers trust. Greylock (venture partner Mike Duboe, with partner Corinne Riley) backed the company from its 2020 Seed round and continued as lead investor in a $14 million round announced in October 2021, alongside Imaginary Ventures and angel investors including Everlane founder/CEO Michael Preysman, Hopin CTO Anthony Kennada, and Datadog COO Adam Blitzer; Duboe joined Builder.io's board. Around the same time, Builder.io recruited Misko Hevery, the creator of Google's Angular framework, as CTO — a hire the company credited with helping it become a magnet for engineering talent.

Through the early 2020s Builder.io grew as a 'visual headless CMS,' adding a native Shopify integration (2020) and universal connectors for commerce and content platforms, reporting 6x year-over-year customer growth and 400+ customers (including Everlane, Alo Yoga, Afterpay, and Vistaprint) by late 2021. In March 2024 it launched Visual Copilot, an AI feature that converts Figma designs into clean, framework-native code (React, Next.js, Vue, Angular, and more) in a fraction of the usual time, positioning the company at the center of the emerging 'design-to-code' AI category. The following month, Builder.io disclosed roughly $37.3 million in total funding across three rounds (a $3.3M Seed in 2020, the $14M 2021 round, and a $20M venture round), and in spring 2024 it raised $20 million from Microsoft's M12 venture fund to expand its go-to-market and global team and deepen its AI roadmap.

By 2025, Builder.io had reframed itself around 'agent-native' software development. In September 2025 it announced availability on Google Cloud Marketplace, integrating with Vertex AI, Firebase, BigQuery, and Cloud Storage, and cited enterprise results such as Fabletics saving over $600,000 annually in development costs, Anheuser-Busch launching 20+ sites in under eight months, and Storyblocks building internal dashboards in under two hours. In November 2025 the company launched Fusion 1.0, described as the first AI agent connecting product, design, and code in one workflow — integrating with Slack, Jira, Figma, and GitHub so a Slack mention or Jira ticket can trigger an AI-generated pull request that product, design, and engineering can all review and refine together. Builder.io said Fusion had already turned more than 10 million designs and PRDs into production features at some of the world's largest companies. The company today organizes its platform around two products, Fusion (AI app/UI development) and Publish (headless CMS and visual page builder), and now benchmarks itself against AI coding/app-building tools such as Lovable, Replit, Bolt, and Figma Make rather than only against traditional headless-CMS competitors like Contentful, Sanity, and Storyblok or visual builders like Webflow.

Business model

B2B SaaS sold to enterprise and mid-market product, engineering, design, and marketing teams; available directly and via cloud marketplaces (e.g., Google Cloud Marketplace).

Subscription/seat-based SaaS pricing across two product lines (Fusion, Publish) plus enterprise contracts; free/self-serve tier for individual builders.

Profile (continued)

A data-quality note: Builder.io (the Greylock-backed visual/AI development platform covered here) is frequently confused in press and search results with the unrelated, unaffiliated company Builder.ai, a UK-based 'AI-assisted' app-development startup once valued above $1 billion and backed by Microsoft and Qatar Investment Authority, which collapsed into bankruptcy in 2025 amid a fraud scandal involving fabricated revenue and undisclosed human engineers posing as AI. Builder.io publicly noted facing a PR/brand-confusion challenge as a result (Express Tribune, June 2025). No connection between the two companies was found in any source reviewed for this profile.

Go-to-market

Enterprise and mid-market e-commerce, retail, consumer, and SaaS companies whose product, design, marketing, and engineering teams need to ship digital experiences faster (e.g., Everlane, J.Crew, Zapier, Anheuser-Busch, Fabletics).
