Alumni Q&A

How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)
One founder was motivated by his own difficulties buying insurance and a belief that the insurance marketplace would shift online as business data did. He was introduced to co-founder Gordon through a mutual acquaintance, and Gordon had grown up hearing about the industry's inefficiencies from his father, an insurance executive.
How did you decide to apply to Y Combinator? What was your experience applying, going through the batch, and fundraising at demo day?
Gordon had previously gone through YC with another company. The founders applied to make progress quickly and to sell into the YC community.

Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Newfront is a San Francisco-headquartered insurance brokerage that pairs specialty brokers with proprietary software for business insurance, risk management, employee benefits/total rewards, and retirement services. It describes itself as building a "system of action" rather than a traditional system of record: a structured data platform that centralizes client insurance and benefits data, documents, policies and plans, supports data-driven carrier placement, digital (paperless) client onboarding, self-service payments and updates, and analytics-supported claims advocacy.

Beyond core brokerage placement, Newfront markets specialty service lines including global solutions, occupational health and safety, risk analytics and benchmarking, claims advocacy, contract review, mergers and acquisitions, and alternative risk financing. It organizes coverage expertise around roughly twenty industry verticals, among them technology, fintech, digital assets and blockchain, digital health, life science, construction, real estate, agriculture, aviation, entertainment, manufacturing, public sector and nonprofit. Newfront Insurance Services is a trade name licensed to sell insurance in all 50 US states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico (California license #0H55918).

Forbes characterized the company as a brokerage using proprietary technology alongside human agents to sell and service business insurance and employee benefits, with software that auto-populates application forms across multiple carriers from a single set of answers. Newfront's website states it has officially joined WTW, and company news announced completion of the WTW acquisition in January 2026.

Founding story

Co-founder Spike Lipkin said he experienced the pain of buying insurance and expected the insurance marketplace to move online as business data did. He met co-founder Gordon Wintrob through a mutual friend who identified them as the two people he knew interested in insurance; Wintrob had grown up discussing industry inefficiencies with his father, an insurance executive. Prior to Newfront, Lipkin was one of the first Opendoor employees and an investor at Blackstone, where he worked on the startup team that built Invitation Homes; Wintrob previously co-founded StackLead (YC W14), acquired by LinkedIn, and holds an MIT EECS degree. The pair joined Y Combinator's Winter 2018 batch to accelerate progress and to sell into the YC community.

Business model

Brokerage: Newfront places business insurance, employee benefits/total rewards and retirement solutions for client organizations, acting as an intermediary with carriers and supported by an in-house technology platform and a network of vendor partners.

Forbes states revenue comes from traditional brokerage commissions.

Traction

Company-reported figures include $3.1 billion in annual premiums placed, roughly 20% of US unicorns represented, 500+ public company experience, 650+ team members, 14,000 clients and a 99% client retention rate; Y Combinator lists a team size of 800. Forbes cited 10,000 customers and $2.3 billion of insurance sold in 2021.

Latest developments

WTW (NASDAQ: WTW) completed its acquisition of Newfront on January 27, 2026, following a definitive agreement announced December 10, 2025. Newfront's site now states it has officially joined WTW. Other recent items include a 2025 community impact and volunteerism expansion, a case study on AI contract review reducing turnaround from weeks to hours, and Chief AI Officer Lin Yuan speaking at the Ai4 2025 conference.

Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history

Market position

Described by WTW's acquisition announcement as a top-40 U.S. broker combining specialty expertise and technology; the company says it became a top 40 broker by revenue in 2022. Forbes reported a $2.2 billion valuation as of its profile and $2.3 billion of insurance sold in 2021.

Positions itself as a technology-native brokerage in an industry it characterizes as antiquated, combining experienced brokers with proprietary software, structured data and generative AI rather than replacing human expertise; cited capabilities include cross-carrier application auto-fill, rapid AI contract review, benchmarking analytics and a client-facing platform for service, payments and policy data.

Technology

Newfront builds a proprietary structured-data insurance platform intended to automate repetitive broker tasks and give clients a centralized, permissioned view of insurance and benefits data, policies and plans. It applies machine learning, computer vision and generative AI/LLMs to document analysis: automated contract review in seconds rather than hours or days, GPT-powered document parsing to compare quotes across carriers, lines and premiums, automated loss-run ingestion to update claims data, and combined spend/claims data for cost benchmarking against peers. The company publishes responsible-AI principles (human-in-the-loop, data security and privacy, pre-deployment testing, bias avoidance, transparency/explainability) and states it is SOC 2 compliant, with encryption in transit and at rest, penetration testing, vulnerability scanning, 24/7 monitoring, multi-factor authentication and endpoint protection. Technology leadership includes Lin Yuan (EVP of Engineering and Chief AI Officer), Patrick Miller (Head of Data & AI, previously an enterprise AI lead at Google) and Aaron Forth (Chief Product Officer).

Go-to-market

Direct brokerage sales through veteran brokers and dedicated service teams organized by industry vertical and specialty service line, supplemented by content marketing (compliance, benefits and retirement insights), press and events, and early relationships with the startup/venture ecosystem including the Y Combinator community, which the founders cited as a reason for joining the accelerator.

Businesses and organizations in the United States and globally, ranging from early-stage startups through mature public enterprises. Newfront reports working with about 20% of US unicorns, hundreds of Y Combinator startups and 150+ (elsewhere stated as 500+ public company experience) public companies; Forbes cites customers including Coinbase and Airbnb.

Geography

Headquartered in San Francisco with offices throughout the United States; licensed in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico. Global risk assessment capability in 100 markets is enabled through the Worldwide Broker Network (WBN), and the company reports serving clients in 100+ countries.

History

Founded in 2017 and part of Y Combinator's Winter 2018 batch. In August 2021 Newfront merged with ABD, a 400-person Northern California insurance and financial services broker. In April 2022 it announced a $200 million investment to modernize insurance, and it was named to Forbes' Fintech 50 in 2021. The company says it became a top-40 U.S. broker by revenue in 2022, expanded nationally and hired more than 250 employees that year; CEO Spike Lipkin was named to the San Francisco Business Times 40 Under 40 list in April 2023. In December 2025 Newfront signed a definitive agreement to be acquired by WTW, reported by Reuters as a deal worth up to $1.3 billion, and WTW completed the acquisition on January 27, 2026.
