Coral Capital's 2026 strategy centers on what it calls Japan's 'third leap,' driven by U.S.-China decoupling that positions Japan as an essential partner in critical supply chains. The firm emphasizes Japan's dominance in semiconductor materials (photoresists, silicon wafers, packaging films), robotics, advanced materials, and nuclear energy. It seeks two kinds of entrepreneurs: Japanese founders in deep tech, defense, energy, and materials who should pursue global (especially U.S.) scale from day one, and American founders rebuilding critical industries who need Japan's manufacturing base, supply chain, IP protection, and engineering talent. Coral aims to connect both sides, having already invested in semiconductors, nuclear, robotics, and defense.

Yohei Sawayama is a Founding Partner at Coral Capital, which he co-founded in 2015 as 500 Startups Japan before rebranding to Coral Capital in 2019. He has invested in over 110 companies including SmartHR, KAKEHASHI, and Kyoto Fusioneering, managing roughly 60 billion yen. Before venture capital he worked as a researcher at Nomura Securities and covered the TMT sector in J.P. Morgan's investment banking division; he holds a master's degree in engineering (nuclear engineering) from the University of Tokyo and has served as an adjunct lecturer at Waseda University since 2021.

He became the company's president in 2006 and subsequently served as chairman, and from 2017 to 2021 he served as vice chair of the Keizai Doyukai. He currently holds outside director roles and advises on Japanese economic and DX initiatives, including venture capital investing and startup support.
Haruna Katayama previously worked at Boston Consulting Group (BCG), where she focused on the healthcare industry and supported cross-border strategy development. During graduate school she researched sexual dysfunction from a neuroscience perspective and worked as a freelance analyst at the intersection of women's health, wellbeing, and technology. She holds a bachelor's degree in business and sociology (cognitive science) from Minerva University and a master's in neuroscience from King's College London, and was a first-cohort member of the Masayoshi Son Foundation and the Tadashi Yanai Foundation.
Iku Sakon works on the Operations Team at Coral Capital as a Fund Operations Associate, having joined the firm in January 2021. After university she worked in export/import sales for the food division of a trading company covering the US, South America, and China, then served as a translator at a major Japanese law firm and as a paralegal at a UK-based law firm handling corporate and dispute resolution matters across Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. She is a graduate of Tokyo University of Foreign Studies.
Kyoko Kobayashi is an executive assistant at Coral Capital, supporting James and Sawayama with scheduling. Before this role, she worked for about seven and a half years as a video content production director at J-Stream, then spent roughly four and a half years at the US-headquartered recruiting firm MRINetwork supporting recruiting offices across Japan, Asia, and Europe. She joined 500 Startups Japan as an executive assistant in September 2016 and moved to Coral Capital in March 2019.
Mizuki Nakamura graduated from International University of Health and Welfare and earned a national qualification as a physical therapist. After working in retail sales at a securities firm, she moved to Singapore and entered the venture capital industry by joining JAFCO Asia. From 2014 she spent about ten years at Mitsubishi UFJ Capital in middle-office roles focused on fund administration and operational efficiency, and joined Coral Capital in September 2024 to handle fund operations.
Naoki Aoyagi began his career in Deutsche Securities' investment banking division before holding roles at GREE, Inc. including CFO, CEO of its U.S. entity, and business division head. He served as CEO of Merpay from November 2017, became SVP of Japan Region at Mercari in January 2022, and oversaw Mercari's Japan business as Marketplace CEO from June 2023 before leaving in December 2023 to found newmo, Inc. in January 2024.
Rie Yano graduated from Sophia University's Faculty of Comparative Culture and joined Mitsubishi Corporation, later earning an MBA from Harvard Business School. She worked on digital marketing and e-commerce at COACH in the US and Japan, founded the fashion resale company Material World in New York in 2012, and after its sale served as GM of MIXI's US operations. As a serial entrepreneur and investor active in longevity, AI, and robotics, she is now a Partner at Coral Capital based in San Francisco, investing primarily in US startups.
Ryo Tsuda graduated from Waseda University's School of Law. He worked as an FP&A analyst in the finance division of GE Japan, then joined GREE in human resources, where he handled mid-career recruiting, HR business partnering, HR for the US subsidiary, internal engagement, staffing/labor management, and BPO, before joining 500 Startups Japan. At Coral Capital he supports hiring for portfolio startups and builds and runs community programs, continuing work he started at 500.
Ryotaro Ishikawa graduated from Kobe University's Faculty of Business Administration and joined Recruit as a new graduate, spending about a decade across HR business (sales and new business development), financial and management accounting, corporate planning, and CVC/investment management. There he played a key role in operating funds totaling around 20 billion yen and in establishing the company's first blockchain fund. He pursued an MBA at HEC Paris starting in 2019 and joined Coral Capital in July 2021, where he works on sourcing new investments and fund operations.
Satoru Masuda joined Impress Corporation in 2004, working as an editorial reporter for the online media outlet INTERNET Watch covering the internet industry. He later became an editorial reporter at TechCrunch Japan (under AOL Online Japan, now Verizon Media Japan) from 2014, then joined BuzzFeed Japan in 2017 as Creative Lead to build its advertising production team.
