He previously served as CEO of WuXi NextCODE, overseeing its operations across the U.S., China, and Iceland, and as CFO and Executive Vice President of Business and Finance at deCODE from 1997 to 2004, where he contributed to the company's development as a leader in human genome analysis and its subsequent $415 million acquisition by Amgen. Smarason also served as Chairman and CEO of Icelandair and held prior positions at McKinsey & Company and as an advisor to venture investors including Polaris Venture Partners and ARCH Venture Partners.

Norman Chen is the Chief Executive Officer of The Asian American Foundation, bringing over thirty years of experience in entrepreneurship, healthcare, and community leadership across the United States and Asia. He previously co-founded the nonprofit Leading Asian Americans to Unite for Change and contributed to the STAATUS Index research on American attitudes toward Asian Americans. His background includes founding Asia Renal Care, a specialty medical network operating across six countries, co-founding DeltaHealth Hospital in partnership with Columbia Heartsource, and leading life sciences investments at Fidelity Asia Ventures and 6 Dimensions Capital. Chen holds a B.S. from MIT and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business, and serves on boards and advisory councils for organizations including The Nature Conservancy, Children's Medical Foundation, and SF Marine Science Institute.
