Mulago Foundation

Avery Bang joined Mulago in 2022 to lead its fellows and sourcing teams and serves as a lead with several portfolio organizations. She previously was CEO of Bridges to Prosperity and Managing Director of the Oxford Seed Fund, and later worked in a private equity office focused on renewable energy, construction, and manufacturing acquisitions. She holds an MBA from the University of Oxford, an MSc from the University of Colorado, and a BA in studio art and BSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Iowa.

Kenichi Nozaki joined Mulago Foundation as an Investment Principal in 2024. He began his career in teaching and administration, supporting students in Bosnia, Haiti, and Somaliland, and later advised nonprofits and philanthropies in the arts, climate, and education at The Bridgespan Group, as well as working with the GreenLight Fund on program replication. He holds degrees in International Relations and Finance from Tufts University.

Liz Grubin joined Mulago as an Investment Principal in 2025. She previously spent 10 years at Vital Wave working on digital for development, collaborating with funders including the Gates Foundation, World Bank, and US CDC, with work spanning global health, safe drinking water, and clean household energy. She holds an MA in Environmental Policy from Tufts University and an MSc in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Rohit Gawande joined Mulago in 2021 as an Investment Principal and works on early-stage climate and social ventures. Before Mulago, he held roles at Powerhouse and Breakthrough Energy Ventures, and spent five years at Acumen in New York and Nairobi, where he helped launch the Impact team. He holds an MBA from MIT Sloan, an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School, and an AB in Public Policy from Princeton.

Sanat Daga joined Mulago Foundation in 2024 as a Principal on the Fellows team. He previously worked as a Manager at Dalberg, a social impact advisory firm, on projects spanning economic mobility, housing, and nonprofit strategy, and advised funders including the Gates Foundation, USAID, and the Mastercard Foundation. Before that he served as Chief Strategy Officer at La Casa Norte, a Chicago housing nonprofit, and he holds an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management and a BA in Economics from UC Berkeley.

Sania Salman joined Mulago Foundation in 2022 as a Principal and now serves as Senior Investment Principal. She previously worked as a Manager at Dalberg Advisors, a social impact and global development consulting firm, and also held roles at Idea Couture and Deloitte Consulting. She holds a BS from Georgetown University and an MBA from the University of California Berkeley, Haas School of Business.

Alex Hughes-Smith leads communications at the Mulago Foundation, where he manages communications strategy and coaches fellows to distill complex models into clear stories. He has worked for about eight years helping social entrepreneurs communicate their work. His background includes teaching in The Gambia with the Peace Corps, studying development at UC Berkeley, and a period working in venture capital.

Bernie Tershy is a conservation entrepreneur who founded Island Conservation, a California-based NGO focused on creating marine and island protected areas and preventing species extinctions. He is an Adjunct Professor in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Santa Cruz, where he co-directs the Coastal Conservation Action Lab, and holds a Ph.D. in neurobiology and behavior from Cornell University. Since 2016 he has helped Mulago source and select its Henry Arnhold Fellows, and his work centers on conservation entrepreneurship and measuring conservation outcomes.

Claire McMahon joined Mulago Foundation in 2025 as Project Manager, overseeing program operations including convenings, grant management, and fellow sourcing. She previously worked on designing global events at Founders Pledge and at the Global Philanthropy Forum, where she led content development, speaker sourcing, and partnerships. She holds an MSc in Environment and Development from the University of Edinburgh and dual BAs in International Policy and Anthropology from Pacific University.

Kristen Sinclair joined Mulago Foundation in 2023 as executive assistant to the CEO. She previously worked in the restaurant industry, holding roles as Production Manager and Pastry Sous Chef at Tartine Bakery and Wholesome Bakery, and later served as Office Manager at Niantic, Inc.'s San Francisco office. She holds an AS in Food Service Management and Culinary Arts from City College of San Francisco.

Kristin Gilliss Moyer is COO and Head of Portfolio at Mulago Foundation, which she joined in 2013 to manage a portfolio of social investments—grants, debt, and equity—in high-impact organizations serving the poor. Her career spans investment banking, the US Peace Corps, the US National Park Service, and nonprofits in early childhood development and immigrant job placement, and she previously worked as a Principal at the Skoll Foundation and Program Finance Officer at the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation. She holds an AB in English from Harvard University and an MPA focused on international development from NYU's Wagner School.

Laura Hattendorf is a Senior Advisor to the Mulago Foundation, where she previously served as Head of Grants and Investments for 14 years and oversaw the foundation's investment strategy. She is a Lecturer at Stanford's Graduate School of Business, co-teaching a course on starting and growing social ventures, and advises social enterprises internationally. Earlier in her career she co-founded the nonprofit Sustainable Conservation, was a partner at commercial real estate developer McArthur/Glen Group, and worked in strategy consulting at Strategic Planning Associates; she holds a BS from the Wharton School and an MBA from Stanford.

Rahila Sule joined Mulago Foundation in 2023 to support data operations and grant management. She previously worked in investment banking operations and at a social enterprise focused on helping African women, where she worked on data and analytics and operational support. She holds a BS in Management Information Systems from Ashesi University and an MS in Public Policy and Management with a focus on Data Analytics from Carnegie Mellon University.

Stephanie Scott joined Mulago in 2024 to lead internal operations, including grants management, HR, and finance. She previously spent over a decade at Room to Read, an NGO focused on illiteracy and gender inequality, where she managed volunteers and fundraising operations before becoming Chief of Staff overseeing strategic planning. Earlier in her career she was a fundraiser and teacher at a school for low-income children in New Jersey, and she holds a BA in International Relations from Brown University.
