Nick Frosst was Geoffrey Hinton's first hire at Google Brain's Toronto lab, joining in 2016 and spending four years researching neural networks alongside the man who would win the Nobel Prize in Physics. In 2019 he left to co-found Cohere with Aidan Gomez and Ivan Zhang, on the bet that a serious enterprise AI company could be built in Canada rather than Silicon Valley; it reached a $7 billion valuation and about $240 million of annual recurring revenue before merging with Germany's Aleph Alpha in 2026 at a combined value near $20 billion. He has become one of the most audible advocates for sovereign AI — systems governments and enterprises run under their own oversight. He does all this while fronting a rock band: he sings for the Toronto group Good Kid, formed in 2015 with fellow computer science students, nominated for a Juno in 2024 and now heard by millions of listeners a month.
