About

At twenty, as a Google Brain intern, Aidan Gomez co-authored “Attention Is All You Need” — the 2017 paper that introduced the transformer and underpins essentially every large language model since. Then he built a company on it. He co-founded Cohere in Toronto in 2019 with Nick Frosst and Ivan Zhang, selling enterprise and sovereign AI to banks, governments, healthcare and defence on a deliberate pitch: customers keep control of their own data rather than routing it through American hyperscalers. Cohere raised about $1.6 billion, reached a $7 billion valuation in 2025 and roughly $240 million of annual recurring revenue, and in April 2026 merged with Germany's Aleph Alpha in a deal valuing the combined transatlantic company at about $20 billion. He finished the Oxford doctorate he had paused to start the company, taking it in 2024.
