About

David Brown is a Montreal-born, Boulder-based entrepreneur, company builder, investor, educator and author. After studying Mathematics and Computer Science at McGill and joining startups in Canada and Florida, he met David G. Cohen and co-founded Pinpoint Technologies in 1993 with Cohen and Robert Durkin Jr. Brown led the EMS-software company as president; ZOLL acquired it in 1999, and Brown later returned to lead the ZOLL Data Systems business through 2013. Between Pinpoint/ZOLL tenures, Brown and Cohen built the mobile location-sharing startup iContact, also described in professional records as iCentric, which failed before the smartphone app-store era. Cohen originated Techstars in 2006 with Brown, Brad Feld and Jared Polis. Brown initially served as investor, adviser and director, joined full-time in 2013 to run global operations, became president/managing partner and then CEO or co-CEO, and stepped down when Maëlle Gavet took office in January 2021 while retaining his board seat and major-shareholder status. He now teaches entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado Boulder and is a partner at food-tech venture fund Zintinus. His book No Vision All Drive uses Pinpoint's growth and sale to teach sustainable company building. His public guidance emphasizes problem-led motivation, humility after failure, destination-oriented execution, people and culture, nontransactional Give First behavior, transparent leadership transitions, self-care, cash and revenue discipline in downturns, and sustainable scale. This dossier separates Brown's founder-company holdings, Techstars governance and accelerator exposure, and Zintinus institutional investments; no complete verified personal angel portfolio or personal check range was found.

Beyond investing

Founded
Brown, Cohen and Durkin founded Pinpoint in 1993 to build computer-aided dispatch and billing software for emergency medical services. Brown served as president. Founder accounts say the bootstrapped business reached more than $50 million in annual sales and 250 employees; those scale figures are not independently audited here. Techstars dates Cohen's idea email to February 18, 2006 and incorporation with Brown, Feld and Polis to November 14, 2006. Brown initially invested, advised and served on the board while running ZOLL Data, then joined full-time in 2013 to provide day-to-day operating and scaling leadership.
Communities
Brown connects Techstars' Give First value to paying forward help without a defined transactional return. He identifies mentors, angels, educational institutions and corporate partners as ingredients of startup-friendly communities. Techstars also pledged one percent of its startup equity to the Entrepreneurs Foundation of Colorado in 2007; that was an institutional pledge, not a documented personal Brown gift.
Awards
Governor Jared Polis named Brown and Cohen 2019 Colorado Governor's Citizenship Medal recipients in the Growth and Innovation category for ingenuity, growth and creating possibilities for others.
More
The subject is the Montreal-born McGill Mathematics and Computer Science alumnus who moved to Florida, partnered with David G. Cohen, founded Pinpoint, wrote No Vision All Drive, co-founded and led Techstars, lives in Boulder, teaches at CU and invests through Zintinus. Results for the Chinova Bioworks co-founder/COO in Fredericton, the British entrepreneur David Brown CBE, the NPR journalist and unrelated executives were excluded. On October 15, 1999, ZOLL merged a subsidiary into Pinpoint and issued an aggregate 425,000 ZOLL shares to Brown, Cohen and Durkin for all Pinpoint equity. A related property entity was acquired for another aggregate 23,769 shares. The filing does not disclose Brown's individual allocation or proceeds. Brown and Cohen's mobile location-sharing product launched before the iPhone and app stores. Brown says they deliberately entered a very different consumer/mobile market, let confidence from Pinpoint outrun their knowledge, and learned humility. The company failed and sold its domain to the unrelated email-marketing iContact. Brown oversaw global operations from 2013 and later served as CEO/co-CEO. Cohen's succession tribute says Techstars grew roughly tenfold on nearly every metric under Brown. This is a first-party assessment, not an audited performance attribution, and the platform's results reflect a large team and network. Brown announced in 2020 that he would step down only after a thoughtful search, remain CEO during the transition, and continue as director, major shareholder, adviser and spokesperson. Gavet became CEO on January 11, 2021. Cohen praised the unusually transparent process and Brown's relationship stewardship. CU's interview recounts investor retreat during the 2009 downturn and Brown and colleagues finding alternative ways to persuade investors to participate. It is a useful operating challenge, but no audited cohort loss or return figures are available from that account. Brown says he was born and raised in Montreal and lives in Boulder with his wife and two daughters. A former ski instructor, he continues to enjoy skiing. Names and private details of family members were not pursued.

Controversies & responses

Where David has drawn public criticism — with what happened, their response, and the criticism itself, side by side.

Later Techstars criticism is board context, not a Brown misconduct finding2023
What happened
Reputable 2024 reporting described employee and managing-director complaints about culture, centralization, layoffs, sponsor dependence and accelerator closures under CEO Maëlle Gavet. Brown had left executive leadership in January 2021 but remained publicly identified as a director. The reporting did not establish personal misconduct by Brown or specify his votes; board oversight is relevant, but Gavet-era operational allegations should not be reassigned to him.

Founder fit — who David backs

Best-supported fit is a humble, persistent founder motivated by an important problem rather than expected wealth; clear about a destination but adaptable on the route; willing to leave an echo chamber and use mentors; capable of attracting and treating people as individuals; candid about failure and leadership transition; disciplined about cash, revenue and sustainable scale; and interested in helping a broader community without immediate quid pro quo. For Zintinus, add validated consumer acceptance, scalable economics, credible food-science or product differentiation, measurable nutrition or sustainability benefit, and readiness for Series A-B growth. Weak fit includes money-first motivation, ego after an early win, dismissing failure evidence, transactional networking, culture treated as generic perks, growth disconnected from cash or customers, avoidable opacity in leadership changes, and assuming a Techstars or Zintinus affiliation creates a personal Brown check.

Strong signalsFounder is driven by a consequential problemClear destination with flexible execution pathHumility and learning after failureAbility to seek views outside an echo chamberSpecific use for mentors, investors and community partnersGive First behavior without immediate expected returnTransparent communication during difficult transitionsRespect for employees as individualsRevenue and cash discipline during downturnsSustainable scale rather than growth theaterPositive social or environmental impact tied to economicsFor food tech, strong customer acceptance and scalable unit economics

How to pitch

Begin with the real problem and why it matters enough to sustain years of work. Explain the destination, what has been learned, why the timing and distribution now work, and how the team has changed its mind after evidence. Show customers, revenue or credible adoption signals; cash needs; next milestones; culture and hiring approach; and the exact help sought from mentors, Techstars, Zintinus or Brown. Describe impact in economic as well as moral terms. For a Zintinus pitch, quantify consumer acceptance, food-science defensibility, unit economics, production scalability, regulatory path and measurable nutrition, waste or emissions benefit. Be candid about failure modes. Verify the relevant vehicle and current mandate rather than presenting a generic Techstars portfolio slide or assuming Brown invests personally.

Stages: pre-seed and seed through Techstars, accelerator, Series A, Series A+, Series B, select follow-on · Sectors: sector-agnostic technology through Techstars, food technology through Zintinus, alternative protein, clean nutrition, functional food, new ingredients, food-waste reduction, shelf-life technology, nutrition analytics, sustainable consumer products

Investment themes

8 documented themes from David's essays, talks and portfolio, grouped by what they say about founders.

More themes6
  • Solve a problem, do not chase money2022

Brown argues that founders driven mainly by expected wealth are pursuing the wrong role; obsession with fixing a real problem creates better odds of persistence and success.

For founders: Lead with the problem, lived motivation and why the team will continue when financial rewards are uncertain.

  • Failure punctures expertise and teaches humility

After Pinpoint's success, Brown says ego contributed to entering mobile consumer software without sufficient platform or distribution understanding. iContact's failure made him more empathetic and humble.

For founders: Explain failed assumptions directly and demonstrate how operating behavior changed.

  • Transparency protects relationships during succession

Brown announced his planned departure before a replacement was selected because concealing a material transition from employees and partners felt inconsistent with relationship stewardship.

For founders: Communicate consequential leadership changes early enough for an orderly, dignified handoff.

  • Self-care improves leadership capacity2020

Brown says sleep, love and replenishment support both decision quality and decision volume; perpetual hurry can reduce effectiveness.

For founders: Treat personal and team wellbeing as operating infrastructure rather than an afterthought.

  • Share sacrifice and prioritize revenue2020

During Covid-19 Brown advised pausing nonessential spending and hiring, closing financings in process, focusing on near-term revenue and sharing salary sacrifice as a team before layoffs where feasible.

For founders: Present runway, revenue options, financing certainty and humane contingency plans.

  • Food-system transformation can pair impact with economics

Zintinus frames nutrition, alternative protein, waste, ingredients and shelf-life innovation as both an urgent sustainability challenge and a large value-creation opportunity.

For founders: Quantify impact and commercial scalability together.

Founders & company building1
  • Set the destination and work the steps2021

No Vision All Drive and Brown's interview advice favor determined movement toward a destination even when the original roadmap is incomplete.

For founders: Show a clear outcome, immediate steps and evidence-driven adjustment rather than pretending certainty.

Health, frontier & community1
  • Give First is deliberately nontransactional

Brown describes Give First as helping without a defined near-term return and links startup-friendly communities to mentors, angels, universities and corporations.

For founders: Ask for and offer concrete help while building reciprocal community over time.

Frequently asked questions

Which David Brown is this?
The Montreal-born McGill Mathematics and Computer Science alumnus who moved to Florida, co-founded Pinpoint with David G. Cohen and Robert Durkin Jr., authored No Vision All Drive, co-founded and led Techstars, lives in Boulder, teaches at CU and is a Zintinus partner. He is not the Fredericton-based Chinova Bioworks co-founder/COO.
Is David Brown still CEO of Techstars?
No. Maëlle Gavet succeeded him effective January 11, 2021. Brown continued as a director and said he would remain a major shareholder, adviser and spokesperson focused on entrepreneurs.
What did Brown do at Techstars before becoming CEO?
He co-founded, invested in, advised and governed Techstars from 2006 while leading ZOLL Data. He joined full-time in 2013 to oversee global operations, first as president/managing partner and later CEO or co-CEO.
Did Brown originate Techstars?
David G. Cohen originated the accelerator idea and sent the February 2006 concept email. Brown, Cohen, Brad Feld and Jared Polis co-founded the incorporated company in November 2006; Brown later became its scaling operator.
What happened to Pinpoint Technologies?
ZOLL acquired it on October 15, 1999 for an aggregate 425,000 ZOLL shares issued to Brown, Cohen and Durkin, plus 23,769 shares for a related property entity. It became the foundation of ZOLL Data Systems; Brown's individual proceeds are not public.
Are iCentric and iContact the same Brown startup?
The reviewed records strongly indicate iCentric Corporation was the legal/professional-profile name associated with the mobile location-sharing startup Brown and Cohen call iContact. It failed before the iPhone ecosystem and is unrelated to the successful email-marketing iContact, which later bought the domain. Exact legal naming remains unresolved.
Does every Techstars portfolio company count as Brown's investment?
No. Brown has founder, shareholder and board links to Techstars, but accelerator and venture entities made company investments. Strong personal attribution requires a direct check, sourcing account, filing or board record, none of which was found for SendGrid, PillPack, DigitalOcean or Zipline.
What does Brown invest in now?
His documented current fund role is partner and company builder at Zintinus, focused on scalable food tech at Series A, A+ and B, especially alternative protein, clean nutrition, functional food, ingredients and food-waste solutions. He also retains Techstars governance and ownership exposure.
Does Brown have a verified personal angel portfolio or check size?
No complete reliable public list or current personal check range was found. Techstars and Zintinus portfolios are institutional, so the dossier does not relabel them as personal angels.
What does Brown look for in founders?
His public guidance favors problem-led rather than money-led motivation, humility, evidence-based adaptation, clear destinations, sustained execution, community engagement, transparent leadership, people care, revenue discipline and sustainable scale.
How should a founder pitch Brown or Zintinus?
Explain the real problem, founder motivation, destination, learning, customer and revenue evidence, cash plan, milestones and exact help needed. For Zintinus add consumer acceptance, food-science defensibility, scalable unit economics, regulatory path and quantified nutrition or sustainability impact.
What failures are material to Brown's record?
His clearest founder-company failure is iContact/iCentric, whose mobile distribution and timing preceded the iPhone/app-store platform. Techstars also faced the 2009 funding downturn. Brown treats failure as a source of humility; complete accelerator loss rates are not public.
Was Brown responsible for the 2023-2024 Techstars controversy?
Reporting centered on CEO Maëlle Gavet's tenure and described culture, centralization, layoffs, sponsor and closure complaints. Brown had left executive leadership in January 2021 but remained a director, making board oversight relevant. No reviewed report established personal misconduct by Brown or disclosed his specific votes.
What has Brown written?
He wrote No Vision All Drive, a Pinpoint memoir and sustainable-company-building guide first published in 2014 and released by Wiley in a third edition in 2019, plus an Inc. column archive and Techstars leadership writing.
