Abraham Bachrach wrote the software that lets a drone fly itself through a forest with no pilot and no GPS. As a doctoral student at MIT he and Adam Bry built a fixed-wing aircraft that navigated autonomously using a laser range finder, years before commercial drones could avoid a tree. He followed that work to Google X's Project Wing in 2012, then co-founded Skydio in 2014 to put the same capability onto cheap smartphone-grade chips and cameras. As chief technology officer he has carried that from the first consumer drone through to the X10 now flown by American public-safety agencies and every branch of the Department of Defense — roughly 22,000 airframes in military use — at a company valued at $4.4 billion in April 2026.
