About
Fourth-generation entrepreneur who has spent more than three decades turning small-business finance from paper-heavy work into connected software. After Price Waterhouse, his family's CertiData, and five years building payments and payroll products at Intuit, Lacerte cofounded PayCycle with former Intuit colleague Martin Gates. A board-led move from PayCycle CEO to CFO became a public lesson in accountability; he then founded BILL from the cash-flow and paperwork pain he had experienced as an operator. He has led BILL through its 2019 IPO, major product acquisitions, nearly half a million business customers, its first full-year GAAP profit, activist engagement, repeated restructurings, and an AI-native reset—while consistently arguing that durable innovation and customer utility matter more than founder wealth.

Beyond investing
- Founded
- Before automating household payroll, Lacerte says he calculated it, prepared forms and checks, and drove checks to early customers' homes. The exercise exposed process details that informed product features. While running PayCycle, Lacerte found that paying bills, collecting receivables, finding documents and managing cash still depended on checks, filing cabinets and spreadsheets. He began forming the BILL idea around 2004 and incorporated the new company in April 2006 to combine workflow, payments and buyer-supplier connections.
- Charities
- Lacerte and his wife, Joyce Chung, are publicly associated with the Bay Area family foundation. Its mission is to restore and protect nature, support under-resourced entrepreneurs, and strengthen community resilience through grantmaking, impact investing and capacity building. No portfolio-company investment is inferred from the mission alone.
- Awards
- Honors include the 2013 Emergence Award, Business Intelligence Group's 2013 Executive of the Year, and EY's 2017 Northern California Entrepreneur of the Year recognition with national-finalist status. BILL's current biography says Accounting Today named him among accounting's 100 most influential people for ten consecutive years. The African Diaspora Network selected Lacerte and Chung as 2026 Barka Award honorees for supporting entrepreneurs, particularly small and midsize businesses facing gaps in capital, networks and opportunity.
- More
- Lacerte says he grew up hearing business problems discussed by his father and grandfather; since the late 1950s, much of the family's work served accountants and small businesses. He calls this his informal 'dinner-table MBA,' not a formal credential. PayCycle was founded in 1999 and introduced its web-hosted payroll application in 2001. By 2004 it reported 14,000 customers; Lacerte later reported more than 25,000 customers, 105 employees, major channel partnerships, and more than $30 million raised by his 2006 departure. Lacerte has said a three-person leadership structure diffused accountability and that the board asked for a clearer answer in 2004. Unable to resolve it to the board's satisfaction, he stepped down as CEO, became CFO, and helped bring in Jim Heeger. He presents the experience as a durable lesson about explicit decision ownership, not as a dispute over misconduct. The operating company was formed in April 2006 as Cashboard, Inc., renamed CashView in September 2006 and Bill.com in December 2007. Investor Gordon Ritter recounts that Marc Benioff offered the bill.com domain during financing; that colorful detail is an investor recollection rather than an SEC fact. Intuit agreed in June 2009 to buy PayCycle for approximately $170 million in cash and completed the acquisition on July 23. PayCycle then served more than 85,000 small businesses. The price was for the company; public sources reviewed do not disclose Lacerte's personal proceeds. BILL priced 9,823,529 shares at $22 on December 11, 2019, for gross proceeds of about $216.1 million; trading began on the NYSE under BILL the next day. Reuters reported a 69% first-day rise. This was a company financing milestone, not a documented personal exit. As CEO, Lacerte oversaw BILL's acquisitions of Divvy for approximately $2.5 billion in 2021, Invoice2go in 2021, and Finmark in 2022. These were BILL corporate acquisitions that broadened the platform; they are not entries in his personal investment portfolio. BILL's IPO prospectus provided one vote per common share rather than a permanent founder super-vote. Lacerte has subsequently argued that founders should remain accountable for long-lived decisions. His fiscal-2025 proxy identified him as board chair, founder and CEO. An August 2024 Form 4 records open-market purchases totaling 42,248 BILL shares across two trusts beneficially owned by Lacerte, at weighted-average prices around $49.18 and $49.79. Fiscal-2025 proxy reporting places his beneficial ownership at roughly 2.8%; holdings change with transactions and vesting. BILL's 2025 proxy reported $16,139,836 in summary-compensation-table total for Lacerte, mostly equity awards; the filing separately calculated $14,284,040 as compensation actually paid under SEC pay-versus-performance rules. These accounting measures are not equivalent to cash received. For fiscal 2025, BILL reported 493,800 businesses using its solutions, $329.8 billion in payment volume, 8.3 million network members, $1.46 billion in revenue and $23.8 million in net income. The same 10-K notes that the company had mostly generated net losses since inception and still carried a $1.5 billion accumulated deficit. BILL reduced its workforce about 15% and closed its Sydney office in December 2023, announced another 6% reduction in October 2025, and in May 2026 said it would cut up to 30% by fiscal year-end while becoming AI-native. Lacerte's messages acknowledged the human cost and framed the actions around profitability, focus and agility. After Starboard Value disclosed an 8.5% stake and prepared a 2025 proxy contest, BILL defended its growth and value-creation record. An October cooperation agreement added Starboard-backed directors and secured standstill and voting commitments. The reviewed record shows engagement and negotiated governance changes, not a lawsuit or finding of wrongdoing by Lacerte. California's Department of Financial Protection and Innovation lists Bill.com, LLC as a regulated money transmitter and, as reviewed, posts no enforcement action for the entity. That limited negative finding should not be read as a claim that no private dispute or regulatory inquiry has ever existed. Public interviews identify Joyce Chung as his wife and mention two children. Lacerte has described parenting as a shared-accountability partnership and has said he is an avid runner. The dossier omits children's names and other private details.

Founder fit — who René backs
Best inferred fit: patient, customer-obsessed founders automating painful SMB financial workflows or expanding access for under-resourced entrepreneurs, with clear accountability and regulatory seriousness.
['wealth-creation-first pitches', 'short-term flip narratives', 'AI products without measurable reduction in customer work', 'claims that ignore payments compliance or trust']
How to pitch
Inference only, not an invitation or disclosed investing mandate: lead with firsthand workflow evidence, durable customer value, responsible controls, and how the product saves small-business owners time; do not cite BILL's venture investors, acquisitions, or the foundation's grants as proof of a personal check-writing program.
Sectors: fintech, SMB software, payments, financial operations, impact investing
Editorial inference from René's portfolio, writing and public record — not a published mandate.

The Fortune 5 Million2006
Lacerte frames America's millions of small and midsize businesses as the 'Fortune 5 Million': businesses that deserve financial capabilities comparable to large enterprises without enterprise headcount or complexity.
For founders: Founders should show how a product expands SMB capability rather than merely adding another dashboard.
Remove work, not just digitize it2026
His current AI position is that SMBs do not want more AI; they want less work. BILL's stated destination is touchless B2B finance in which agents handle repetitive coding, reconciliation and payment steps while people retain control.
For founders: Useful signal for applied-AI founders who can quantify eliminated workflow and preserve human judgment, security and auditability.
Owner Mode and future accountability2024
Drawing on PayCycle, Lacerte argues that healthy debate requires a named decision owner and that leaders should make present decisions as if they will personally answer for the outcome years later. In 2026 he called his alternative to the founder-versus-manager debate 'Owner Mode.'
For founders: Signals preference for explicit ownership, long time horizons and learning from governance setbacks.
Long-term capital relationships2019
He has said he chose the right partner over squeezing valuation in a private round and resisted raising BILL's IPO price above its marketed range because he had made a commitment to investors. He advises founders to cultivate capital partners continuously.
For founders: Relationship quality, credibility and repeated-game behavior appear stronger signals than maximizing a single financing headline.
Innovation over wealth creation2024
Lacerte told Fortune that organizing entrepreneurship primarily around wealth creation is unhealthy for founders and society; he emphasizes solving consequential customer problems and building to last rather than building to flip.
For founders: Mission, resilience and customer outcomes should lead a pitch; personal-liquidity ambition should not.
Accountants, banks and embedded trust1999
From PayCycle onward, he has used accountants and financial institutions as trusted channels and designed tools that let firms manage many clients. BILL's network and partner strategy extends that pattern.
For founders: Relevant to regulated fintech founders who can earn distribution through trusted intermediaries instead of relying only on direct acquisition.
