Monzo's 2016 founder interview uses Jonas Huckestein; its 2023 farewell uses Jonas Templestein for the same founder. His current LinkedIn display name is Templestein while its stable URL remains jonashuckestein, and his old Monzo Community posts now display Templestein. The verified Companies House officer record gives the current name Jonas Werner Templestein, birth month July 1988, British nationality and UK residence. It does not provide a full birth date or birthplace. His biographies say he moved from Germany to the United States in 2010, becoming Campfire Labs' first engineer before its acquisition by Groupon. HipDial used personal conference lines, caller ID and host notifications to remove PINs and reservations. The free tier ended in September 2014 after proving uneconomical, while a paid plan was offered. Templestein said he first met Blomfield while they worked together in New York, tried to recruit him to his own SaaS business and contemplated a Chile incubator before Blomfield persuaded him to move to London to help start a bank. In his farewell he recalled the founding team's attempt to hand the first cards to passers-by at Old Street roundabout, a concrete example of the bank's early hands-on launch. By March 2016 he said he had recently moved from writing and reviewing code every day to growing the engineering team and ensuring the pieces were in place to launch the bank. He described the early technical goal as a distributed bank whose service would survive the loss of any data centre. Monzo's 2016 platform account documents Go microservices, Kubernetes, Docker, linkerd, Kafka and automated failure recovery; these were team choices, not solely his work. In a 2018 Q&A he explicitly said the small-service, Go and Cassandra design was heavily influenced by Matt and Oli's experience at Hailo. This qualifies claims that Templestein alone architected Monzo's stack. He said the upfront microservices investment had enabled over 600 services and more than 100 production deployments per day by a dozen squads, usually without cross-team interference. On 11:FS he connected Monzo's early office hackathons and word-of-mouth growth to customers identifying as a community, not merely users receiving free foreign transactions. His first-person Monzo article argued that information should be open by default unless customer privacy, employee circumstances, contracts or regulation require secrecy. Examples included open meetings, searchable communication, shared documents and internal visibility into governance decisions. The 2018 engineering principles emphasized shipping and iteration, small frequent changes, deliberate technical debt, root-cause work, refusal to normalize unexplained behavior, readable and debuggable code, evidence-based optimization and unblocking peers. Monzo's 2018 engineering-management model used small interdisciplinary squads while keeping team-lead prioritization separate from long-term coaching, progression and wellbeing responsibilities. He said Meri Williams had mentored him on scaling engineering, was more qualified for the CTO role and would free him to work on organization design. City A.M. reported Williams would assume the role in September 2018. In his farewell, he said a pandemic-era funding round had collapsed, losses and incidents were mounting, regulators were rightly concerned about the business model, and many stakeholders including himself at times thought a sale might best protect customers and staff. He credited Sujata Bhatia and TS Anil with helping the company persist. This was a company-level strategic crisis, not a finding of personal misconduct. In a first-person 2023 community answer he described a database bug that corrupted some customer data and forced a choice between an hours-old backup and repair. The team identified the affected data and backfilled it from another source after more than 24 hours. He did not attribute the incident to one person. After Matej Pfajfar became CTO in February 2023, Templestein spent time on parental leave, returned to hands-on coding in Elixir and small projects, and ended his Monzo tenure on 1 December. Companies House incorporated Nustom (UK) Limited on 9 February 2024 for software development. Reporting identified Oliver Beattie as co-founder and a broad party round; later public profiles and the open repository use Iterate. Business Insider reported talks for roughly $5-6 million through SAFEs at a $50 million valuation cap, with Index, General Catalyst and Accel expected to invest; it expressly said the round was not final and terms could change. TechCrunch later confirmed Nustom as Andrena's first investment and named OpenAI, Balaji Srinivasan, Garry Tan and Naval Ravikant among backers, without confirming the final total or cap. Templestein described Garple as a side project selling short pseudoword domains. His posts said the project made early revenue and that every line of product code was written by the team's AI coding agent, while human engineers stood behind the broader software service for work the agent could not do well enough. At Create With 2025 he emphasized starting from a customer outcome, using reversible prototypes, treating early users as co-designers, adding guardrails and observability, and keeping components modular as models change. With Misha Kaletsky, he presented an experimental Iterate architecture in which model output, errors, configuration and side effects are append-only events; pure reducers reconstruct state before hooks perform external actions. The presentation explicitly exposed authentication, secrets, rate-limit, circuit-breaker and eventual-consistency considerations and was not represented as production-ready. The public Iterate monorepo describes a hackable AI agent and identifies Templestein's account among its leading contributors. The conference biography also credits a tree-sitter grammar converter for llama.cpp. A 2018 Monzo Q&A identified Leah as his fiancée, long-time Monzo colleague and imminent spouse; he later referred to their honeymoon. His 2023 farewell described parental leave, building a talking toy for his daughter and putting down roots with his family in the Cotswolds. The dossier does not infer further private details.
