Daniel Dines turned a ten-person Bucharest apartment into one of the largest software listings in American history. He founded UiPath in 2005 as DeskOver, after five years as a software engineer at Microsoft in Seattle, and built it into the company that defined robotic process automation — software robots that do the repetitive clicking office work is made of. UiPath listed on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2021 at $56 a share, closing its first day worth about $35.8 billion, and now reports $1.6 billion of annual revenue and $1.85 billion of annual recurring revenue, having reached full-year GAAP profitability. He handed the chief executive's seat to a co-CEO in 2022 and took it back alone in June 2024, and remains chairman. He takes a nominal salary — about $6,000 a year — and has taken no equity grant since before the listing.
