Company profile
researched Aug 2026Vinted (Vinted Group UAB) is a Lithuanian technology company that operates an online consumer-to-consumer marketplace for second-hand clothing, shoes and accessories for women, men and children. Members photograph and list items themselves, set their own prices, and communicate and complete orders inside the app; buyers pay shipping and receive prepaid carrier labels, and can have parcels delivered to a home address or a pickup point. Listings are organised by category and brand, with the most-used categories including outerwear, dresses, tops and T-shirts, jumpers and sweaters, jeans, jewellery and boots.
Beyond apparel, the platform has extended into homeware, kidswear, books, collectibles, high-value fashion and, from late 2024, electronics. The group is structured as several connected businesses: the Vinted Marketplace peer-to-peer platform, Vinted Go for logistics and shipping, Vinted Pay for in-app payments (which obtained an EMI licence), and Vinted Ventures, an investment arm focused on the circular economy. A verification service for designer and luxury items was launched to support higher-value trades and was live in ten countries as of October 2024. The company is headquartered in Vilnius, with additional offices in Germany and the Netherlands, and employs more than 2,200 people.
Founding story
Vinted was co-founded in 2008 in Vilnius by Milda Mitkutė and Justas Janauskas. Mitkutė was moving from her home town to the capital and found she had a wardrobe full of clothes she no longer wore, some still with tags; she raised the idea of an online way to swap clothes with Janauskas at a housewarming party, and the two built and released a first version of the site within two weeks. It grew quickly among Lithuanian users, and an early business angel, Mantas Mikuckas, later joined full time as an executive.
Business model
Vinted runs a marketplace connecting individual sellers and buyers of pre-owned goods. Listing and selling are free and sellers keep the full sale price; the buyer pays shipping and an optional Buyer Protection fee that provides a refund if an item is lost, damaged in delivery or significantly not as described. The app also carries advertising, and the group operates adjacent shipping (Vinted Go) and payments (Vinted Pay) businesses, plus a Vinted Pro offering for professional sellers.
Revenue is generated from buyer-side Buyer Protection fees charged on transactions, shipping services, and advertising on the platform; the group reported €1.1 billion of revenue and €62 million of net profit in 2025.

Revenue grew 61% in 2023, the year the company reached profitability with a double-digit EBITDA margin, and GMV rose more than 3.5x between the 2021 round and October 2024. UK usage grew from 1.2 million users in 2021 to 8 million in 2023, and the Android app has surpassed 100 million downloads.

▸Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies
Market position
Vinted describes itself, and is described in press coverage, as Europe's leading second-hand consumer-to-consumer marketplace focused on fashion, operating in more than 26 markets. In 2025 it was reported as France's top clothing retailer by sales volume. Its Android app lists over 100 million downloads and a 4.6 rating from about 2.29 million reviews, and it is presented alongside marketplaces such as eBay, Temu, SHEIN and AliExpress in the app store's similar-apps listings.
The platform charges sellers nothing and lets them keep the full listing price, shifting fees to the buyer side, and combines the marketplace with owned shipping and payments infrastructure, item verification for luxury goods, and Buyer Protection covering loss, damage or misdescription.
Technology
The service is delivered through a website and iOS/Android mobile apps that handle listing creation, search and filtering, member-to-member messaging, order management and payouts to bank accounts. Supporting systems include integrated multi-carrier shipping with prepaid labels and pickup-point delivery, in-app payments through Vinted Pay, and an item verification service for designer and luxury goods.
Go-to-market
Growth is driven by the free mobile app and website, country-by-country market launches across Europe, social channels including TikTok and Instagram, on-platform advertising, and brand activity such as collaborations with public figures and charities and a branded television format.
Individual consumers buying and selling used clothing, shoes and accessories for women, men and children, plus adjacent categories such as homeware, kidswear, electronics, books and collectibles; professional sellers are served through Vinted Pro.
Geography
Headquartered in Vilnius, Lithuania, with offices in Germany and the Netherlands, and serving more than 26 markets across Europe. Markets added in the year to October 2024 included Finland, Greece and Croatia, with Ireland, Greece, Latvia, Slovenia and Estonia announced for 2025; shipping operations have been expanded in the Netherlands, Belgium and France.
History
After launching in Lithuania in 2008, Vinted opened in Germany in 2009, which shifted the founders' ambitions from a local to an international business. It raised €6 million from Accel Partners in 2013 and €24.8 million from Accel and Insight Venture Partners in early 2014. Dutch entrepreneur Thomas Plantenga joined in 2016 as a strategy consultant and later became CEO. In November 2019 the company raised €128 million at a €1 billion valuation in a round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, making it Lithuania's first technology unicorn. It acquired Dutch competitor United Wardrobe in October 2020 and merged the German Kleiderkreisel and Mamikreisel platforms into Vinted in November 2020, and acquired Danish resale platform Trendsales in 2024. A €340 million secondary share sale led by TPG closed in October 2024 at a €5 billion valuation, followed by an €880 million secondary transaction in April 2026 at an €8 billion valuation.
Risks & controversies
Vinted has been scrutinised by data protection authorities in France, Lithuania and Poland over GDPR compliance and account-blocking practices, with the Lithuanian regulator fining it €2,375,276 in July 2024 in a case coordinated through a European Data Protection Board working group. Swedish police reported around 300 fraud cases linked to the platform in early 2024, and a October 2024 Channel 4 documentary examined safety and privacy issues including the sexualisation of underage users' images and uncertified second-hand baby products. A November 2025 UK sizing-system change drew user criticism, and in June 2026 viral TikTok claims alleged that toy listings were a front for child trafficking; Vinted denied the claims and French police opened an investigation. App store reviews raise complaints about return shipping costs on misdescribed items, short refund windows for lost parcels and withheld seller payouts.
