Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Uber Technologies, Inc. is an American multinational transportation company headquartered at 1725 3rd St., San Francisco, California. It provides ride-hailing, courier and package delivery, food delivery (Uber Eats) and freight transport services through mobile apps that match riders and customers with drivers and couriers. Sources describe it as the largest ridesharing company worldwide, serving roughly 70 countries and, per differing figures in the same source, 10,500 to 15,000 cities.

The company's consumer site presents three principal user groups: riders booking trips (with fare and travel-time comparison across service options), drivers and couriers who earn through rides or deliveries using their own or rented vehicles, and business customers using Uber for Business to manage global rides, meals and local deliveries. Subsidiaries and former subsidiaries listed include Uber Eats, Cornershop, Careem (2020–2023), Drizly (2021–2024) and Uber Carshare (2022–2024).

Uber trades on the NYSE under the ticker UBER and is a component of the Dow Jones Transportation Average, S&P 100 and S&P 500. Key people are chairman Ronald Sugar and CEO Dara Khosrowshahi. For 2025 the company reported revenue of $52.017 billion, operating income of $5.565 billion, net income of $10.053 billion and 34,000 employees.

Founding story

Uber was founded in March 2009 by Garrett Camp, a co-founder of StumbleUpon, and Travis Kalanick. Camp conceived the idea to make direct transportation easier and cheaper after he and Kalanick spent $800 hiring a private driver on New Year's Eve, an amount they considered excessive; Camp was also motivated by difficulty finding a taxi on a snowy night in Paris. The mobile app prototype was built by Camp with friends Oscar Salazar and Conrad Whelan, with Kalanick serving as "mega advisor." The company was originally named Ubercab (2009–2011).

Business model

Uber operates a multi-sided marketplace connecting riders and delivery customers with independent drivers and couriers, and sells a business-facing platform (Uber for Business) for companies to manage rides, meals and local deliveries. Drivers and couriers work as independent contractors and can use their own vehicles or rent one through Uber.

Uber takes a share of gross bookings on transactions across its segments. In the fourth quarter of 2025 the take rate was 29.9% for mobility services and 19.2% for food delivery. Reported 2025 revenue was $52.017 billion.

Traction

As of the most recent source data: over 202 million monthly active users, 10 million active drivers and couriers, an average of 42 million trips and delivery orders per day, and 72 billion cumulative trips and delivery orders since 2010. 2025 financials show $52.017 billion revenue, $5.565 billion operating income, $10.053 billion net income, $61.802 billion total assets and $27.041 billion total equity, with 34,000 employees.

Latest developments

Uber is launching robotaxi services in multiple cities with partners including Lucid Motors, Nuro, Baidu, Pony.ai, Avride, Nissan, Rivian, Zoox, Stellantis, Wayve and Nvidia. Recent portfolio changes include the shutdown of Drizly by March 2024 with associated layoffs, Careem listed as a subsidiary from 2020 to 2023 and Uber Carshare from 2022 to 2024, and continued growth of alcohol delivery within Uber Eats, which Uber said doubled globally in the category.

▸Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Sources describe Uber as the largest ridesharing company worldwide, with over 202 million monthly active users, 10 million active drivers and couriers, roughly 42 million trips and delivery orders per day, and 72 billion cumulative trips and orders since 2010. In food delivery it has consolidated the market through the Postmates acquisition, which followed a reported failed attempt to buy Grubhub; other consolidation cited in the sector includes Grubhub/Just Eat and DoorDash/Caviar.

Uber combines mobility, food and grocery delivery, freight and business fleet management on a single consumer app and account, a strategy it cited when closing Drizly in order to consolidate food, grocery and alcohol ordering into Uber Eats. Early positioning emphasized on-demand black-car service; scale, multi-category breadth and robotaxi partnerships are its current stated distinguishing features.

Technology

The business runs on consumer-facing mobile apps (Uber rider app, Driver app, Uber Eats) and a web platform that provides pricing and travel-time estimates across service options, trip planning and account management. Early hires included a nuclear physicist, a computational neuroscientist and a machinery expert working on arrival-time prediction more accurate than Google APIs. Uber acquired Geometric Intelligence in 2016 to form an internal AI and machine learning research group (shut in 2020) and is deploying robotaxi services with partners including Lucid Motors, Nuro, Baidu, Pony.ai, Avride, Nissan, Rivian, Zoox, Stellantis, Wayve and Nvidia (using Nvidia Drive software).

Go-to-market

Uber acquires users through its rider, driver and Uber Eats apps and website, with city-by-city market launches, a self-serve driver signup funnel including vehicle rental options, and a separate enterprise sales motion for Uber for Business. It has also grown by acquiring competitors and adjacent services such as Postmates and Drizly.

Consumers seeking rides and food, grocery, alcohol and package delivery; individuals seeking flexible earning opportunities as drivers or couriers; and companies of any size using Uber for Business for employee travel, meals and local deliveries.

Geography

Headquartered in Mission Bay, San Francisco (1725 3rd St.), with operations in approximately 70 countries and 10,500–15,000 cities. The consumer site localizes to markets such as Colombia, with city pages for Bogotá, Medellín, Cartagena, Ibagué, Cali, Barranquilla, Tunja, Bucaramanga, Villavicencio and Armenia. Alcohol delivery through Uber Eats is available in 35 U.S. states and 25 countries.

History

Ryan Graves became the first employee in February 2010 and CEO in May 2010, before Kalanick succeeded him as CEO in December 2010. After a beta launch in May 2010, the service and app launched publicly in San Francisco in 2011, initially offering only black luxury cars at about 1.5 times taxi prices; the company renamed itself from UberCab to Uber that year following complaints from San Francisco taxicab operators. Chicago launched in April 2012 and UberX, a lower-cost tier, followed in July 2012; in April 2013 Uber opened UberX to drivers using personal vehicles, subject to background checks, insurance, registration and vehicle standards. By December 2013 Uber operated in 65 cities. Shared rides and Uber Eats launched in August 2014. In August 2016 Uber sold its China operations to DiDi for an 18% stake, with DiDi investing $1 billion in Uber. Acquisitions included self-driving truck company Ottomotto ($625 million, 2016) and Geometric Intelligence (December 2016, forming the Uber AI division, closed May 2020). Dara Khosrowshahi replaced Kalanick as CEO in August 2017. Uber acquired Postmates for $2.65 billion in an all-stock deal in 2020 and Drizly for $1.1 billion in October 2021; Drizly was closed by March 2024.

Risks & controversies

The Wikipedia article carries a neutrality dispute notice (August 2026). Reported issues include the Ottomotto acquisition and associated Waymo trade-secret litigation, which Uber settled; criticism from the Electronic Frontier Foundation in September 2017 after receiving a five-star privacy rating that July; and public statements by Kalanick and angel investor Jason Calacanis that rival Wingz was illegal. Labor concerns were reported around the Postmates acquisition: couriers with driving violations or criminal histories were denied approval to drive for Uber Eats, others faced background-check delays and lost income, roughly 185 Postmates full-time staff were laid off in January 2021, and economists cited reduced competition for gig labor. Drizly experienced a data breach affecting 2.5 million customers, drew an FTC order, was shut down in 2024, and more than 160 Drizly employees were laid off.
