He joined Intuitive's first engineering team in 1996 as a Control Systems Analyst and subsequently held positions including vice president of engineering, senior vice president of product operations, and President and Chief Operating Officer; prior to Intuitive, he worked on computer-enhanced surgery technology at SRI International and supported a NASA team studying pilot performance assessment. Guthart holds a B.S. in engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MS and PhD in engineering science from the California Institute of Technology, and he sits on the boards of Illumina and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group.
