Company profile
researched Aug 2026Palantir Technologies Inc. is an American publicly traded software company that develops data integration and analytics platforms. It operates four main product lines: Gotham, an intelligence and defence analysis tool used by militaries, counter-terrorism analysts, the United States Intelligence Community, the Department of Defense and multiple police departments; Foundry, which creates a central operating system for an organisation's data so users can integrate and analyse it in one place; Apollo, which delivers software and updates continuously across environments and enables deployment in virtually any environment via CI/CD; and the Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP), which provides unified access to open-source, self-hosted and commercial large language models and converts structured and unstructured data into LLM-understandable objects and organisational processes into tools for humans and LLM-driven agents.
The company's software-as-a-service is one of five offerings authorised by the U.S. Department of Defense for Mission Critical National Security Systems (IL5). Its customer base spans federal agencies, state and local governments, international organisations and private companies; named corporate users have included Morgan Stanley, Merck KGaA, Airbus, Wejo, Lilium, PG&E and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, with earlier commercial work reported at JPMorgan Chase and Hershey's. Palantir is headquartered in Florida (variously described as Miami and Aventura) after originally being based in Palo Alto, California, and reported 4,429 employees in 2025.
Founding story
Palantir was incorporated on May 6, 2003 and grew out of the PayPal alumni network. Peter Thiel named the company after the "seeing stone" in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, and office locations were likewise given Tolkien names — The Shire (Palo Alto), Rivendell (McLean, Virginia) and Grey Havens (London). In 2004 Thiel bankrolled a prototype built by former PayPal engineer Nathan Gettings and Stanford students Joe Lonsdale and Stephen Cohen, and hired his Stanford Law School contemporary Alex Karp as chief executive. Multiple versions of the founding story exist, but all describe Thiel and Karp producing software for which others found applications. Venture capital interest was initially thin because government contracting was seen as slow and low-margin; according to The Wall Street Journal, at launch in 2004 there were three investors besides Thiel and Karp, and Thiel and his fund largely covered the initial $30 million cost, while CIA-affiliated venture firm In-Q-Tel invested about $2 million and introduced the company to intelligence analysts whose demands shaped the technology over two years.
Business model
Palantir sells and deploys enterprise software platforms to government and commercial customers, historically using a forward-deployed engineer model in which technical staff embed with clients to configure the software on site. Products are licensed and deployed across customer environments, including secure and on-premises settings, with Apollo handling continuous delivery of software and updates.
Revenue comes from deployments of its software platforms to government agencies and commercial enterprises, including large defence procurements such as the $480 million Maven Smart System contract, alongside a growing commercial customer base.
Traction
Reported 2025 revenue of $4.48 billion, with operating income of $1.41 billion and net income of $1.63 billion, total assets of $8.90 billion and total equity of $7.39 billion. Trailing-twelve-month revenue was reported at $6.16 billion with net income available to common of $3.02 billion, and Q2 FY26 revenue of $1.94 billion with earnings of $1.06 billion. 2024 revenue was about $2.87 billion, up 29% year over year. Market capitalisation was reported at roughly $447 billion intraday. AIP adoption was reported to have driven approximately 40% year-over-year growth in commercial customer count, with nine consecutive profitable quarters by mid-2025.
Latest developments
Palantir reported 2025 revenue of $4.48 billion and 4,429 employees. It has a strategic partnership with Ondas Inc. to develop and deploy AI-enabled operational capabilities for stratospheric, aerial and land-based ISR missions, and a strategic collaboration with NVIDIA to deliver an engine for running NVIDIA AI and Nemotron open models in sovereign environments. Separately, OpenAI's deployment arm agreed to acquire Northslope, an applied-AI firm founded by Palantir alumni that held Palantir Vanguard Elite network status, in a deal whose terms were not disclosed.
▸Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies
Market position
Palantir is a component of the Nasdaq-100, S&P 100 and S&P 500 indices, joining the S&P 500 in 2024, and is characterised as a critical infrastructure provider of AI-enabled analytics for governments and enterprises. Competitors cited include Splunk, Databricks, Snowflake, Alteryx, Looker, Sisense and Domo across data integration, cloud warehousing and business intelligence. Its forward-deployed engineering model has been described as pioneering, and OpenAI's deployment arm has acquired firms founded by Palantir alumni to build a comparable capability, placing it in eventual competition with Palantir.
Palantir combines integration of siloed, unstructured data with on-site forward-deployed engineers, shortening integration timelines for many clients, and has maintained founder control by declining to offer board seats to investors, including In-Q-Tel, through successive funding rounds. It positions itself around intelligence augmentation of human analysts rather than fully automated analysis, and states that it does not collect or store customer data, with customers retaining rights to their own data.
Technology
The platforms perform data integration and analysis across disparate and unstructured sources. Gotham combines link analysis, geospatial mapping and temporal tracking, integrates data from multiple domains and sensors in near real time for battlespace situational awareness, and supports hand-off between analysts and operational users. Foundry provides self-service data pipelines and analytics as a central operating system for organisational data. Apollo enables CI/CD across all environments. AIP provides unified access to open-source, self-hosted and commercial LLMs, transforming structured and unstructured data into LLM-understandable objects and turning organisational actions and processes into tools for humans and LLM-driven agents. The company has argued that artificial intelligence alone cannot defeat an adaptive adversary and has promoted human analysts exploring multi-source data, an approach it calls intelligence augmentation.
Go-to-market
Sales are driven by direct deployments into high-trust, hard-to-serve settings, with forward-deployed engineers embedded at customer sites to tailor the software. Early awareness in the intelligence community spread largely by word of mouth, aided by In-Q-Tel's introductions. The company also uses partnerships, including a strategic partnership with Ondas Inc. for AI-enabled ISR capabilities and a strategic collaboration with NVIDIA to run NVIDIA AI and Nemotron open models in sovereign environments, and an earlier reseller arrangement with Thomson Reuters.
Federal agencies, defence and intelligence organisations including the U.S. Intelligence Community and Department of Defense, militaries, police departments, state and local governments, international organisations, and large private companies across manufacturing, energy, healthcare and finance.
Geography
Headquartered in Florida (Miami/Aventura) after originally operating from Palo Alto, California, with additional named offices in McLean, Virginia and London. Offices were opened in London and Canberra around 2011 to serve Five Eyes partners, and the company operates in the United States, the United Kingdom and internationally, including a German entity, Palantir Technologies GmbH, in Frankfurt and Palantir Technologies UK Ltd.
History
After its early intelligence-community work — which included a subprime lender study for the Center for Public Integrity and analyses of Somali piracy, Hezbollah and the Chinese GhostNet platform — Palantir launched Gotham and expanded. In April 2010 it announced a partnership with Thomson Reuters to sell its Metropolis product as "QA Studio", and in June 2010 Vice President Joe Biden and OMB Director Peter Orszag publicly credited Palantir with supporting the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board's stimulus fraud-detection work, announcing wider deployment starting with Medicare and Medicaid. Industry analysts estimated 2011 revenues at roughly $250 million. Metropolis later evolved into Foundry for commercial users, and offices opened in London and Canberra around 2011 to serve Five Eyes partners. A 2016 legal victory against the U.S. Army was described as setting a commercial-first procurement precedent, and in that year the company acquired data-extraction startup Kimono Labs. Palantir went public in 2020 through a direct listing, restructured toward GAAP profitability after a 2022 stock decline, reported GAAP profitability from early 2023, launched AIP in 2023, joined the S&P 500 and won a $480 million Maven Smart System contract in 2024.
Risks & controversies
The company has been criticised for its role in expanding government surveillance through artificial intelligence and facial recognition, and for contracts with the Trump administration and the aggregation of sensitive data on Americans. Civil liberties organisations have described its police technology as predictive policing, a characterisation CEO Alex Karp disputes. Observers note examples of data management failures, and some commentators fault Thiel and Karp for allowing conspiracy theories about the company to spread. The New Republic described Karp's formation of Palantir as an embrace of techno-militarism. Earlier reception was polarised, with critics flagging transparency and surveillance concerns, and the stock declined during the 2022 market downturn.
