Technology

Beam develops proprietary vehicle and software technology, including its fifth-generation Beam Saturn e-scooter with 12-inch wheels (20% larger than the average e-scooter), hydraulic suspension and fully swappable batteries rated for 110 km of range, and the Beam Jupiter/Pluto e-moped. Its MARS safety suite provides on-edge geofencing, dead reckoning and the Beam Pedestrian Shield AI camera for pedestrian and footpath detection, giving councils control over zoning, parking and speed limits.

The company website lists operations in Australia (launched January 2019; cities include Adelaide, Cairns, Darwin, Mackay and Stirling), Malaysia (January 2019; including Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak), Korea (June 2019; more than 30 cities including Seoul, Busan, Incheon and Daegu), Türkiye (September 2022; Ankara, Antalya and Mugla), Indonesia (September 2022; Jakarta, Bandung, Bekasi, Depok and others) and the United States (October 2022; Albuquerque and Tulsa). At the time of its 2022 Series B the company operated in 35 cities across Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand.

History

Beam launched operations in Australia and Malaysia in January 2019 and in South Korea in June 2019. In February 2022 it raised a US$93 million Series B led by Affirma Capital, bringing total funding raised to $135 million, and set out plans to enter Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Turkey and to become the first tri-modal micromobility operator in Asia Pacific by adding e-mopeds. It launched in Indonesia and Türkiye in September 2022 and in the United States in October 2022, began integrating Pedestrian Shield technology in January 2023, reported adjusted EBITDA profitability in April 2024, and announced a merger with Neuron in July 2025.

Risks & controversies

The company operates under city-by-city permits and regulatory frameworks; its CEO noted in 2022 that regulation of micromobility was tightening in some Asian countries and that Beam rebalances vehicle assets between geographies depending on deployment opportunities.
