Acerta

Acerta (Acerta Analytics) develops LinePulse, an industrial AI analytics platform for discrete manufacturing quality. The software ingests production, test and sensor data to provide real-time statistical process control and predictive monitoring, configurable dashboards, alerting ahead of line issues, and machine-learning-driven root cause analysis that detects escalating failure patterns and identifies contributing factors. The company positions LinePulse as a replacement for advanced statistical control software, spreadsheets, in-house machine learning models, custom data querying tools and dashboarding tools; it is not itself an SPC, PLC, MES, ERP or QMS product, but takes data from MES and PLC systems and integrates with QMS platforms.

The company was started by industrial and machine learning engineers who observed that manufacturers generated large volumes of unused data. Initial work with automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers including Ford, BMW, Dana and Nissan used custom machine learning algorithms to reduce scrap and rework; because bespoke models were slow to build and deploy, Acerta packaged its manufacturing and machine learning expertise into LinePulse, which it says can be deployed in under 30 days. Earlier platform positioning covered the full vehicle lifecycle, normalizing data from design and development, pre-production and production testing, and connected vehicles to detect early indicators of future product failures and reduce warranty exposure.

Acerta states it analyzes more than 21.6 million events per day, connects 125,000 inputs and sensors, and manages more than 300 manufacturing lines across 12 countries. Its site lists Ballard, Ford, Linamar, ZF, Dana, BorgWarner and BMW among manufacturers using its technology, with published case studies at Dana (8% throughput increase, 98% sub-assembly first-time-through) and an axle program showing a 65% reduction in axle failure and rework and an estimated $2.5-3 million saved.

Founding story

Before founding Acerta, Greta Cutulenco worked at automotive supplier Magna International as a safety engineer on advanced driver assistance systems, where she found the process of assessing the quality and operation of vehicle technology systems to be largely manual. She took that observation to the University of Waterloo, where she and co-founders Jean-Christophe Petkovich and professor Sebastian Fischmeister researched automated pattern recognition and anomaly detection using increasingly available vehicle data, and the three launched Acerta as a business in early 2017.

Business model

Acerta sells LinePulse as a software platform to discrete manufacturers, principally automotive OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, deployed against customer production data through an ingestion API and integrations with existing plant systems such as MES, PLC and QMS. Earlier in its history the company also delivered custom machine learning models and, from 2021, production line consultancy services, and it distributes technology through partners including ETQ, Microsoft and Telit Cinterion.
