Matthew Nicholls is Senior Tutor at St John's College, Oxford, and a Visiting Professor of Classics at the University of Reading, where he worked from 2007 before taking up his Oxford role in 2019. He holds MA, MPhil, and DPhil degrees from the University of Oxford, received a National Teaching Fellowship in 2017 and a Guardian/Higher Education Academy teaching award in 2014, and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 2023. His research focuses on the city of Rome, including a digital 3D reconstruction of the ancient city, and on ancient books and libraries in the Roman world, and he has authored 30-Second guides to Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece.
