Technology

The core technology is the Prufrock series of tunnel boring machines, designed to mine at up to one mile per week — about six times faster than the company's earlier Godot-Plus TBM — with Prufrock-3 targeted at higher speeds. Key design features are porpoising (launching from and re-emerging at the surface, enabling tunneling to start within 48 hours of arrival on site and craneless retrieval without a pit), continuous mining that installs precast segments while advancing, and ZPIT (Zero People in Tunnel) autonomous remote operation. The Loop system uses all-electric, zero-emission vehicles running point-to-point through the tunnels; Hyperloop, a proposed extension of the architecture, envisions autonomous electric pods at 600+ mph and has been tested via a vacuum-pump test tunnel in Bastrop, Texas.

History

By its April 2022 Series C announcement, TBC said it had spent five years building core technologies for Loop and Hyperloop. Its first commercial system, the LVCC Loop, opened in April 2021 for the Mecum Motorcycle Auction. Clark County commissioners unanimously approved the 29-mile, 51-station Vegas Loop on October 20, 2021; approved scope later grew to 68 miles and 104 stations. The Resorts World connector opened in 2022, the Westgate connector in 2024 (alongside the LVCC Loop expansion), and the Encore connector in 2025. A Hyperloop test tunnel was built in Bastrop in 2022. Press reporting states the company spun out of SpaceX in 2018.

Risks & controversies

Press coverage notes that tunnel workers have suffered serious injuries and that Nevada regulators said in 2025 that The Boring Company violated environmental regulations nearly 800 times. The reported $4 billion / $20 billion-valuation round had not closed as of the reporting, leaving final terms uncertain.
