Pixxel

Pixxel is a space technology company that designs, manufactures and operates hyperspectral Earth-observation satellites and the software used to analyse their data. Its satellites capture imagery across more than 250 VNIR and SWIR spectral bands at 5-metre native resolution, with a 40 km swath and daily revisit, producing a spectral signature of surface materials and conditions that conventional multispectral systems cannot resolve. The company describes its scope as "planetary infrastructure": sensing satellites, Earth intelligence software, and space systems supporting both commercial and sovereign missions.

The product portfolio includes the Firefly commercial constellation of six hyperspectral satellites, all launched during 2025 and operating in orbit; three earlier demonstration satellites at 10–30 m resolution; and Aurora, an in-house Earth Observation Studio that combines satellite imagery, AI analytics, geospatial workflows, tasking, archive ordering and a model marketplace. Pixxel also manufactures satellites and imaging payloads for other organisations and governments, operating a 30,000+ sq ft spacecraft assembly, integration and testing facility called MegaPixxel in Bengaluru. Planned next-generation systems include the Honeybee hyperspectral constellation extending into shortwave infrared, plus synthetic aperture radar and ultra-high-resolution optical imaging, with the first Honeybee satellite expected to launch in 2027.

Application areas span agriculture (crop stress, species classification, yield prediction, soil nutrients), energy (oil spill detection, pipeline monitoring, vessel tracking), mining (mineral detection, illegal mining, environmental compliance), forestry, environment and government/defence use cases including disaster response and maritime ISR.

Founding story

Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal founded Pixxel in February 2019 while students at BITS Pilani, after Ahmed served as a founding member and engineering lead of team Hyperloop India, a national finalist at the 2017 SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. Identifying a gap in available spectral resolution, the pair set out to provide high-resolution hyperspectral data for climate, agriculture, mining, environment and energy applications, with the stated mission of building "a health monitor for the planet."

Business model

Pixxel sells hyperspectral satellite imagery and derived analytics, delivered through the Aurora platform via archive ordering and satellite tasking, and also provides satellite manufacturing services ranging from small satellites to imaging payloads for other organisations and governments. It additionally pursues government and defence programmes, including contracts and grants from NASA, the US National Reconnaissance Office, India's iDEX/Ministry of Defence and IN-SPACe.

Revenue sources described include sales of hyperspectral imagery and analytics through the Aurora platform (with tasking, archive ordering and pricing/refund terms documented for customers), satellite and payload manufacturing services, and government contracts and grants.

Traction

Six Firefly commercial satellites launched in 2025 (three in January, three in August) and operating in orbit, following three earlier demonstration satellites launched 2021–2022. Aurora launched publicly in August 2024. Contracts and selections include NASA's Commercial SmallSat Data Acquisition programme, an NRO Strategic Commercial Enhancements contract, iDEX Prime and SPARK grants for the Indian Air Force, and selection to lead an IN-SPACe consortium building India's first privately led national Earth observation constellation of 12 satellites. Total funding reached $195 million after the September 2026 Series C.

Latest developments

On 7 September 2026 Pixxel announced a $100 million Series C co-led by Temasek and Seraphim, with 360 ONE Asset, IMM Investment, Radical Ventures, growX ventures and M&G Catalyst participating, bringing total funding to $195 million. Proceeds are earmarked for the Honeybee SWIR hyperspectral constellation (first launch expected 2027), SAR and ultra-high-resolution optical sensing, further Aurora development, sovereign Earth observation systems, and manufacturing expansion in India and the US. Other 2026 developments include an NRO Strategic Commercial Enhancements contract (May 2026), plans for India's first orbital data centre demonstration satellite powered by Sarvam (May 2026), a space-debris-removal partnership with Cosmoserve (March 2026), an NSIL distribution partnership (April 2026), an IN-SPACe consortium agreement (January 2026) and an MoU with Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (July 2026).
