Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Flipkart (Flipkart Internet Private Limited) is an Indian e-commerce company headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, serving the Indian market. Founded in October 2007, it began as an online bookstore and later expanded into consumer electronics, fashion, home essentials, groceries, furniture, beauty, books and lifestyle products. The company's own site describes more than 200 million users and over 150 million products across 80-plus categories, sold through the Flipkart website and mobile app.

The group operates a set of subsidiaries and units including Myntra (fashion), Ekart (logistics), Cleartrip, Flipkart Wholesale, Shopsy, Jeeves and Super Money. Flipkart Wholesale was launched after Flipkart acquired a 100% stake in Walmart India, which operated the Best Price cash-and-carry business, and initially piloted grocery and fashion categories under Adarsh Menon. Kalyan Krishnamurthy is CEO of the Flipkart Group, appointed in January 2017.

Walmart holds a controlling stake following its 2018 purchase of a 77% interest for US$16 billion, later reported at roughly 80.5-85% ownership. A 2023 AllianceBernstein report cited by Wikipedia put Flipkart's share of the Indian e-commerce market at 48%.

Founding story

Flipkart was founded on 22 October 2007 in Bengaluru by Sachin Bansal and Binny Bansal, unrelated IIT Delhi alumni who had both worked as software engineers at Amazon. They started from a two-bedroom apartment in Koramangala with initial personal/family capital of about ₹400,000 (₹200,000 from each founder's family), selling books online. Early operations were manual, with the founders sourcing books from wholesalers in Daryaganj, Delhi and handling packaging and delivery themselves, offering competitive pricing and a 30-day replacement guarantee. The site reportedly handled around 100 orders a day by 2008.

Business model

Flipkart runs an online marketplace and app through which third-party sellers and brands list products across categories such as mobiles, electronics, large appliances, clothing, footwear, furniture, groceries, books, beauty and automotive accessories. It supports the marketplace with its own logistics arm, Ekart, and fulfilment centres, and operates category-specific subsidiaries such as Myntra for fashion, Shopsy, and Flipkart Wholesale for kirana stores and MSMEs. Sales events such as Big Billion Days, bank card discounts and credit offerings like Flipkart Pay Later are used to drive volume.

Revenue is generated from online retail and marketplace sales across product categories, with additional group businesses in wholesale (Flipkart Wholesale/Best Price), fashion (Myntra), travel (Cleartrip), logistics (Ekart) and payments/fintech units. Wikipedia reports revenue of ₹82,787 crore (US$8.6 billion) and a net loss of ₹5,189 crore (US$540 million) for the financial year ended 31 March 2025.

Traction

The company's site cites over 200 million users and 150 million-plus products across 80-plus categories. Other reported figures include over 100 million registered users, more than 100,000 sellers, 21+ warehouses, over 10 million daily page visits and more than 8 million shipments per month, with more than 1 billion people reported to have shopped on Flipkart. Big Billion Days generated US$100 million of sales in 10 hours in 2014 and US$300 million GMV in 2015; 1.3 million phones were sold in 20 hours on 21 September 2017. Reported revenue for FY ended 31 March 2025 was ₹82,787 crore (US$8.6 billion) with a net loss of ₹5,189 crore.

Latest developments

Flipkart raised US$3.6 billion in July 2021 at a US$37.6 billion valuation, led by GIC, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, SoftBank and Walmart, with sovereign funds from Malaysia, Qatar and Abu Dhabi also participating, ahead of an anticipated stock market debut; Reuters had reported preparations for an IPO outside India potentially valuing it at up to US$50 billion. A US$1 billion round including a US$350 million investment from Google was reported in 2024. Financials published for the year to 31 March 2025 show revenue of ₹82,787 crore and a net loss of ₹5,189 crore, and the company's domicile was reported to have moved from Singapore to India.

Full profile — market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

A 2023 AllianceBernstein report credited Flipkart with a 48% share of the Indian e-commerce market, competing principally with Amazon India and domestic rival Meesho. In 2018 it was described as dominant in apparel, aided by the Myntra acquisition, and level with Amazon in electronics and mobile phones; it held a 51% share of Indian smartphone shipments in 2017 versus Amazon India's 33%. Earlier competition came from Snapdeal, ShopClues and Paytm, with Reliance Industries a more recent rival.

Flipkart adapted e-commerce to Indian market conditions with cash-on-delivery, a 30-day replacement guarantee and locally built logistics through Ekart, and built scale through a multi-category catalogue and a portfolio of subsidiaries spanning fashion (Myntra), payments (PhonePe), travel (Cleartrip), wholesale and reselling (Shopsy).

Technology

Flipkart operates its own e-commerce platform and mobile app, the Ekart courier and logistics network, fulfilment centres supporting next-day and same-day delivery, and payments/fintech assets including PhonePe (acquired 2016) and Flipkart Pay Later; the earlier in-house payment platform Payzippy was merged into Ngpay in 2014. Management has cited use of made-in-India technology to develop supply chain and consumer experiences.

Go-to-market

Customer acquisition relies on the Flipkart website and mobile app, large discount-led sale events such as Big Billion Days (multi-day and at one point app-exclusive), bank cashback tie-ups, exclusive smartphone launch partnerships (for example Moto G, Moto E, Xiaomi Mi 3, Redmi 1S and Redmi Note in 2014), everyday offers pages and brand storefronts.

Online consumers across India, spanning demographics and price points, served with categories from smartphones and appliances to apparel, groceries and furniture. Through Flipkart Wholesale the company also targets kirana stores and MSMEs, and Shopsy is positioned toward small entrepreneurs and resellers.

Geography

Headquartered in Bengaluru, Karnataka, with operations serving India. Sources cite state-of-the-art warehouses (21 or more) and fulfilment centres supporting same-day and next-day delivery in major cities; the group's corporate domicile was reported to have shifted from Singapore to India.

History

After launching as a bookseller in 2007, Flipkart acquired WeRead from Lulu.com in 2010, Mime360.com and Chakpak's digital content library in 2011, and launched the DRM-free music store Flyte in 2012, which shut in June 2013. It acquired electronics retailer Letsbuy in 2012 and fashion retailer Myntra in May 2014. The first Big Billion Day sale on 6 October 2014 sold US$100 million of goods in 10 hours but drew criticism over technical issues and stock shortages. Later deals included a 34% stake in MapmyIndia (December 2015, about ₹1,600 crore/$260 million), Appiterate (April 2015), PhonePe (2016), Jabong from Rocket Internet (July 2016, US$70 million) and a US$2 million investment in TinyStep (January 2017). In April 2017 eBay agreed to sell eBay.in to Flipkart and invest US$500 million; a July 2017 offer of US$800-900 million for Snapdeal was rejected. Walmart announced its acquisition of a 77% stake for US$16 billion in May 2018, after which Sachin Bansal left the company and eBay sold its stake back for US$1.1 billion. Flipkart launched Shopsy on 2 July 2021 and raised US$3.6 billion in July 2021 at a US$37.6 billion valuation.

Risks & controversies

The 2014 Big Billion Day sale drew criticism over website technical failures and stock shortages, and high-traffic sales have caused site crashes. Indian traders protested the Walmart acquisition as a threat to domestic businesses. The company faces antitrust scrutiny from India's Competition Commission over practices alleged to favour select sellers, and reported a net loss of ₹5,189 crore for FY2025. Its digital music store Flyte was shut in June 2013 after competition from free streaming services, and a mobile-app-only strategy experiment was reversed.
