Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Truecaller is a mobile application developed by the Swedish company True Software Scandinavia AB, headquartered in Stockholm. The app provides caller identification, spam and fraud call detection and blocking, reverse phone number lookup, SMS identification (Message ID), SMS fraud detection, call recording with transcription and AI-generated summaries, messaging, call screening via the Truecaller Assistant, identification of unknown contacts on platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram, and a Family Protection feature covering up to five members. It is distributed on Android, iOS and Wear OS, and is offered both free (caller ID and spam blocking) and as a paid premium tier that adds ad-free use, advanced spam blocking, profile view history, incognito mode and premium support. Android builds are distributed through Google Play, the App Store, Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Indus and Galaxy stores, and as an APK from the company's own website.

The app was first launched on Symbian and Windows Mobile on 1 July 2009, then on Android and iPhone on 23 September 2009, followed by BlackBerry (February 2012), Windows Phone (March 2012) and Nokia Series 40 (September 2012). Truecaller expanded into India in 2012 and later established an Indian subsidiary in 2017. Alongside consumer apps, the company operates a business-facing arm launched in 2020 as "Truecaller for Business", which includes enterprise verification and a Risk Intelligence service for fraud and risk screening. Users who do not wish to be searchable can unlist their number, a step the company states is irreversible and takes up to 24 hours.

In addition to the app, Truecaller maintains identity and spam databases built from its user community. The company reports over 500 million monthly active users, one billion app installs and more than 68 billion spam calls identified and blocked. Its co-founders stepped back from operational roles effective 30 June 2025, remaining board members and advisers, with Rishit Jhunjhunwala taking over as group CEO from 9 January 2025.

Founding story

Truecaller was founded in 2009 in Stockholm by Nami Zarringhalam and Alan Mamedi, two engineering students who met at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Frustrated by unidentified incoming calls β€” some of which turned out to be relatives calling from abroad β€” they built a caller ID app themselves, handling both design and code, and posted it on an internet forum, where it reached roughly 10,000 installs in its first week. Before Truecaller, Mamedi had worked as a salesman at The Phone House, launched the bid auction site Bidding.se in 2006 (later acquired) and the home-interiors search engine MΓΆbeljakt.se in 2007, and joined Birdstep Technology as chief architect in 2008. Early investors were hard to find, so the founders initially bootstrapped the project until organic growth attracted venture interest.

Business model

Truecaller distributes a free consumer app with caller ID and spam blocking and monetises it through three streams: advertising shown in the free app, a premium consumer subscription, and business/enterprise services. Advertising accounts for roughly 80 percent of total revenue.

Advertising (launched 2016, about 80 percent of revenue), consumer premium subscriptions (launched 2018) covering ad-free use and advanced spam blocking, and B2B products under Truecaller for Business (launched 2020) including enterprise verification and Risk Intelligence services. TrustCheckr adds a SaaS offering for customer verification and phone-number-based fraud risk scoring.

Traction

Reported figures include 500 million+ monthly active users, one billion app installs, and 68 billion+ spam calls identified and blocked cumulatively; around 50 billion unwanted calls identified and blocked in 2022; and, per one 2024 account, 2.4 trillion unknown calls identified and 47 billion spam and fraud calls flagged in 2023. As of October 2023 the company reported more than 356 million active users. Wikipedia reports revenue growth of 39 percent in constant currency in 2025 and more than 500 million users as of 2026, of which 350 million are in India. The company posted its first profit in 2019.

Latest developments

In January 2025 Truecaller enabled real-time caller ID and spam blocking for iOS 18.2 users, functionality previously limited to Android. Co-founders Alan Mamedi and Nami Zarringhalam announced on 6 November 2024 that they would step back from operational duties as of 30 June 2025 while remaining board members and advisers; Rishit Jhunjhunwala, who joined as head of product in 2015 and served as India CEO, became group CEO on 9 January 2025. The company continues to add AI-based tools, subscription features and enterprise services.

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Truecaller describes itself as the leading global platform for verifying contacts and blocking unwanted communications and the go-to app for caller ID and spam blocking, with over 500 million monthly active users and more than a billion downloads. It became a top-three communication app in India, where roughly half of smartphone users were on the app by 2021, and it is characterised as the world's largest verified mobile phone community.

Management cites the scale of its crowd-sourced number and spam database, over 15 years of accumulated learnings, and a product-first culture as its principal advantages, combined with a free app funded by advertising and a premium tier for advanced users.

Technology

Truecaller uses a large crowd-sourced database of phone numbers and community spam reports, with spam lists updated in real time. Machine learning is applied to caller ID to indicate caller location, business status and likely importance. The Message ID feature runs on-device machine-learning models so messaging data does not leave the phone during identification, categorising SMS such as OTPs, transactions, bills, deliveries and travel itineraries. SMS fraud detection flags suspicious messages, disables links and gates access until the sender is marked safe. Call recording includes voice-to-text transcription and AI-generated summaries, and the Truecaller Assistant performs call screening on Android and iOS. TrustCheckr's technology combines external fraud signals with Truecaller's internal signals. Truecaller has also partnered to use Yelp API data to identify business numbers.

Go-to-market

Growth has been driven largely by organic adoption and word of mouth, with app-store distribution across Google Play, the App Store and multiple Android OEM stores plus direct APK download from truecaller.com. The company built a local organisation in India via a subsidiary established in 2017, and sells enterprise services directly to businesses; TrustCheckr brought existing enterprise customers such as IIFL Finance and Piramal Capital and Housing Finance.

Smartphone users seeking to identify unknown callers and block spam and fraud calls and messages, with the largest user base in India; on the business side, enterprises including banks, fintechs and other financial institutions that need to verify customers, assess fraud risk and reach consumers.

Geography

Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, with most employees in India and offices there dating from 2012 and a subsidiary formed in 2017. India accounts for roughly 74–75 percent of revenue and the largest user and employee base; early traction also came from Jordan and Lebanon, and the company has targeted North America, Asia and the Middle East.

History

The app launched on Symbian and Windows Mobile in July 2009 and on Android and iPhone later that year. Word of mouth pushed it into the top three apps in Jordan and Lebanon in 2011, and in 2012 the company expanded into India and released versions for BlackBerry, Windows Phone and Nokia Series 40. It reported five million users in September 2012 and 10 million by January 2013. OpenOcean invested US$1.3 million in September 2012, followed by a Sequoia Capital-led round in 2013/February 2014 and a US$60 million round led by Atomico with Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins in October 2014. After that larger raise the company expanded and hired rapidly, later needing to right-size costs and pivot toward profitability; it recorded its first profit in 2019. Monetisation began with an advertising platform in 2016, a subscription tier in 2018 and the B2B "Truecaller for Business" product in 2020. TrueMessenger, an India-only SMS app launched in July 2015, was folded into the main app in April 2017. User milestones include 100 million monthly active users in 2017, 200 million (150 million in India) in 2019, 250 million monthly active and 500 million registered in 2020, and 300 million active users in November 2021. Truecaller listed on Nasdaq Stockholm on 8 October 2021 after announcing IPO plans in December 2019. It acquired fraud-detection provider TrustCheckr in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Risks & controversies

India, which supplies about 74–75 percent of revenue, is developing a telecom-operator-based caller ID alternative through TRAI's CNAP framework, tested in mid-2024, which analysts expect could materially affect Truecaller usage in India if rolled out nationally. TRAI's 2024 crackdown on unregistered telemarketers could reduce spam volumes and therefore ad impressions in the app. Truecaller faces litigation in Nigeria over data practices (including ONWUBUARIRI vs Truecaller International LLP and OKAFOR vs Truecaller International LLP), where it argues users uploading phone books are the data controllers and Truecaller is only a processor; the company reportedly does not upload phone books in Europe due to GDPR. In February 2025 Sweden's data protection authority IMY opened a supervisory investigation into Truecaller's data practices. In July 2013 its servers were reportedly breached by the Syrian Electronic Army via an unmaintained WordPress installation; Truecaller confirmed the website hack but said no passwords or credit card data were disclosed. Following its large 2014 raise the company over-hired and had to cut costs as cash ran low. The Wikipedia article carries maintenance notices about possible undisclosed paid editing and neutrality.
