Andromeda Robotics

Andromeda Robotics is a Melbourne-based robotics company that develops Abi, a social humanoid companion robot designed for residents of aged care and assisted living facilities. Abi is positioned as a companion rather than a task assistant: it converses, plays games, tells stories, dances and sings, and adapts to each resident's personality, ability and language with the stated aim of reducing loneliness and isolation while supporting care teams.

The robot stands about 120 cm tall, is built from 3D-printed parts and has a cartoon-inspired design informed by feedback from around 40 Melbourne nursing homes during development. It uses a screen-based face for animated emotional expression, a chest-mounted vision system for autonomous wheeled navigation, facial recognition and memory that allows it to recall earlier interactions, and conversational AI built on ChatGPT supporting more than 90 languages. The company has also described a next-generation version of the robot called Genesis Abi.

Andromeda works directly with aged care and assisted living providers, with customer references including mecwacare and Medical & Aged Care Group. The company reported a headcount of roughly 30 people in 2025 and stated plans to scale production from 8 to 100 units per month.

Founding story

Founder and CEO Grace Brown had built robots as a hobby since age 15 and started work on Abi as a personal project to cope with isolation during COVID-19 lockdowns while studying mechatronics engineering at the University of Melbourne. After graduating she launched Andromeda in 2022, co-founding the company with university friend Yan Chen, with the goal of using robotics to address loneliness among vulnerable groups including aged care residents and children in hospitals.

Andromeda sells and supports Abi units to aged care and assisted living operators. Pricing is reported to be based on the number of robots deployed and the level of support services required, with each unit reportedly costing about $10,000 to build.

In September 2025 press reported a $23 million Series A led by Forerunner Ventures with participation from Rethink Impact and Main Sequence Ventures, at a reported $100 million valuation. The company said it would use the capital to scale production, work through its waitlist, grow the team, roll out a next-generation robot called Genesis Abi, and expand into the North American aged care market. The founder stated the company had reached $3 million in revenue and had raised roughly $4 million prior to the round.
