Jack Ma founded Alibaba in his Hangzhou apartment in 1999 with seventeen colleagues and took it public in New York in 2014 in what was then the largest IPO in history at $25B. A former English teacher rejected from dozens of jobs, he built Taobao and Alipay into the infrastructure of Chinese commerce. He retired as chairman in 2019 and withdrew from public life after a 2020 speech criticising Chinese financial regulators.
