Griptape

Griptape is an AI orchestration platform that lets users combine multiple AI models and agents into repeatable, secure workflows. The platform has three main components: Griptape Nodes, a drag-and-drop visual interface for building and running AI workflows without writing code, available as a browser interface and as a desktop application for Windows, Mac and Linux; the Griptape Framework, an open-source modular Python toolkit for building generative AI agents, pipelines, workflows and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications, which includes the Griptape Engine that executes workflows in the cloud or on-premises; and Griptape Cloud, a hosted service covering data processing pipelines, retrieval-ready databases and serverless application runtimes so users do not manage infrastructure themselves.

The framework provides abstractions including Structures (Agents, Pipelines and Workflows), Tasks, memory types (Conversation, Task and Meta Memory), Drivers for prompt/LLM interaction, embeddings, vector stores, reranking, SQL, file management, image generation, text-to-speech, audio transcription, web search and scraping, and observability, plus Engines for RAG, extraction, summarization and evaluation, and Tools that let LLMs interact with external data and services. A feature marketed as Off-Prompt keeps large or sensitive task outputs out of the prompt sent to the model, which the company positions as improving security, performance and cost. Under Foundry, Griptape is positioned for studios that need controlled access to rapidly evolving AI models alongside security, versioning, provenance and metadata tracking, and traceability requirements typical of high-end media production, with node libraries for tools such as Foundry Nuke and Autodesk Flow Production Tracking.

Founding story

Griptape was founded in 2023 in Seattle by two Amazon alumni. CEO Kyle Roche spent more than eight years at Amazon Web Services, including as head of immersive technology where he led teams behind services such as Amazon Location Service, Amazon Nimble Studio and Thinkbox; he had earlier founded IoT startup 2lemetry, acquired by Amazon in 2015. CTO Vasily Vasinov was most recently a principal product manager at AWS and had met Roche as a senior software engineer at 2lemetry. They were joined by chief product officer Derek Pai, a former AWS principal product manager, and chief creative officer Jason Schleifer, a former principal creative director at AWS and animation industry veteran who co-founded Nimble Collective (acquired by AWS in 2019).

Business model

Griptape sells software through a tiered subscription model alongside an open-source Python framework distributed under the Apache-2.0 license. Foundry lists a free non-commercial tier for single users, a Professional tier at $40 per user per month or $400 per user per year for teams of up to three users that includes $40 worth of model credits per month, and a custom-priced Enterprise tier with unlimited users, advanced permissions controls, on-premise or cloud deployment, and premium support and onboarding. Consumption of third-party cloud-hosted models is metered through Griptape credits, which can be topped up in-app; running open-source models locally or using customer-supplied API keys does not consume credits.

Per-seat subscription fees (monthly or annual), custom enterprise licensing, and consumption-based Griptape credits for third-party cloud model usage; Griptape Cloud additionally hosts and operates workflow infrastructure.

Traction

The core open-source framework repository has approximately 2,600 GitHub stars, 254 forks and more than 1,760 commits, and the Griptape GitHub organization maintains around 94 repositories including a nodes engine and multiple node libraries, with commit activity continuing into 2026. Early named customers were Torc, ThingLogix and Zennify. Foundry markets Griptape with a "Trusted By" customer roster on the Griptape Nodes site.
