Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Couchbase, Inc. is an American software company that develops a distributed NoSQL document (JSON) database platform for applications running across cloud, on-premises, mobile and edge environments. Its product line includes Couchbase Server, which can be downloaded and installed on Windows, Linux, macOS, Docker, Kubernetes and ARM platforms; Couchbase Capella, a fully managed database-as-a-service; and Couchbase Mobile, including Couchbase Lite, an embedded database for offline-first applications that synchronizes through Sync Gateway or Capella App Services. The Couchbase Autonomous Operator provides a Couchbase-specific API for managing database clusters within Kubernetes.

The platform is multi-model, supporting key-value access, the SQL++ (N1QL) query language for JSON, full-text search, analytics, eventing and cross data center replication (XDCR). Its architecture is memory-first and shared-nothing with a built-in managed cache, designed to avoid a single point of failure and to support elastic scaling, workload isolation, real-time replication, geo-distribution and disaster recovery. Couchbase Server also supports distributed ACID transactions, added in version 6.5 (January 2020), and vector search, added in version 7.6 (March 2024). SDKs are available for .NET, C, Go, Java, Kotlin, Node.js, PHP, Python, Ruby, Scala and Rust for Server/Capella, and for Android, C, .NET, Java, JavaScript, Objective-C and Swift for Couchbase Lite. Despite the similar name, Couchbase is a distinct technology from Apache CouchDB and is not a fork of it.

The company is headquartered in San Jose, California, with additional offices listed in Austin, Bengaluru, Tel Aviv, Singapore and London. It positions Capella as a developer data platform that unites transactional, analytical, mobile and AI workloads in a single managed service. Following its September 2025 take-private transaction, Couchbase is owned by private equity firm Haveli Investments.

Founding story

Couchbase's origins lie in two companies founded in 2009. NorthScale was founded in 2009 by officers including James Phillips, Steve Yen and Dustin Sallings, who were involved in the development of memcached; it was later renamed Membase, Incorporated during 2010, with the open-source Membase project beginning in June 2010. Separately, CouchOne Inc. was founded in 2009 as Relaxed in Berkeley, California, developing and providing commercial support for the Apache CouchDB open source document database. Couchbase, Inc. was created through the merger of Membase and CouchOne in February 2011, with the aim of building a scalable, high-performance document-oriented database marketed under the NoSQL label.

Business model

Couchbase commercializes its database technology through subscriptions to Couchbase Server for on-premises and self-managed deployments and through Couchbase Capella, a consumption-oriented fully managed database-as-a-service, alongside mobile and edge products. It offers a free, no-credit-card Capella trial that includes 50GB of storage, sample datasets, tools and tutorials, as an entry point to paid usage.

Revenue comes from commercial subscriptions and contracts for its database software and managed cloud service. At the time of its 2020 Series G, the company reported growth in total contract value, new business and average subscription deal size, and disclosed near-$100 million in committed annual recurring revenue.

Traction

In May 2020 the company reported approximately $100 million in committed annual recurring revenue, 70% total contract value growth over the prior fiscal year, more than 50% new business growth, over 35% growth in average subscription deal size, and adoption by 30% of the Fortune 100. It completed an IPO on Nasdaq in July 2021 and was acquired in 2025 in a transaction valued at approximately $1.5 billion.

Latest developments

Couchbase agreed on June 20, 2025 to be acquired by Austin-based private equity firm Haveli Investments for $24.50 per share in cash, valuing the company at approximately $1.5 billion β€” a 29% premium to the prior closing price and a 67% premium to the March 27, 2025 price β€” with a go-shop period expiring June 23, 2025. Stockholders approved the deal at a special meeting on September 9, 2025, and the acquisition closed on September 24, 2025, after which Couchbase became privately held and its shares were delisted from Nasdaq. Haveli held an approximately 9.6% stake prior to the takeover. Morgan Stanley & Co. LLC advised Couchbase financially with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati as legal counsel; Jefferies LLC was lead financial advisor and Latham & Watkins LLP legal counsel to Haveli. Subsequent company announcements include general availability of the AI Data Plane and the appointment of a chief financial officer and a senior vice president of AI.

β–ΈFull profile β€” market position, technology, go-to-market, geography, history, risks & controversies

Market position

Couchbase competes in the NoSQL database market against MongoDB, DataStax and the major cloud vendors' database services. It differentiates on a combination of SQL support over JSON, built-in caching and offline-first mobile capabilities. Recognition cited includes the 2012 InfoWorld Bossie award, the Dataweek 2012 award, an Always-On Global award, inclusion in VentureWire's 50 FASTTech companies and GigaOM's Structure 50 list, and a Gartner Cool Vendor award.

The company positions its platform as combining strengths of SQL, NoSQL and NewSQL in a single database: a full SQL-style query language over schemaless JSON, distributed ACID transactions, an integrated managed cache providing microsecond latency, multi-dimensional scaling, and an offline-first embedded mobile database that synchronizes with the server tier β€” capabilities it states most NoSQL competitors do not match collectively.

Technology

A distributed, memory-first, shared-nothing NoSQL architecture storing schemaless JSON documents with a built-in managed cache for microsecond latency. It is multi-model, supporting key-value lookups, the SQL++ (N1QL) query language with JOINs, full-text search, analytics, eventing and cross data center replication, plus distributed ACID transactions and vector search. Deployment options span Couchbase Server on Windows, Linux, macOS, Docker, Kubernetes and ARM; Capella on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure; the Couchbase Autonomous Operator for Kubernetes; and Couchbase Lite with Sync Gateway or Capella App Services for offline-capable mobile and edge devices.

Go-to-market

Couchbase combines a developer-led motion β€” free Capella trials, downloadable Couchbase Server and Couchbase Lite, a browser-based Playground, SDKs and documentation β€” with enterprise sales for mission-critical deployments. Proceeds from its 2020 Series G were earmarked for expanding product development and global go-to-market capabilities, including geographic expansion to serve global customer operations.

Application developers and enterprise architects building modern web, mobile and IoT applications, ranging from startups to large enterprises; as of May 2020, 30% of the Fortune 100 were reported to use the database. Common use cases cited include user profiles, session management, catalogs, content management and financial technology.

Geography

Headquartered in San Jose, California (previously described as Santa Clara-based in 2020 coverage), with additional offices listed in Austin, Bengaluru, Tel Aviv, Singapore and London. Capella clusters can be deployed on AWS, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

History

After the February 2011 merger that formed Couchbase, the company shipped Couchbase Server 1.8 in January 2012 (a rebranding of the Membase line) and Server 2.0 in December 2012, adding a JSON document store, distributed indexing and query, incremental MapReduce and XDCR. Couchbase Mobile 1.0 launched in May 2014, and the ForestDB storage engine was announced in October 2014. Server 4.0 (October 2015) introduced multi-dimensional scaling, geospatial indexes and the N1QL/SQL++ query language. Subsequent releases included Server 5.0 in October 2017 (full-text search, ephemeral buckets), Server 6.0 in October 2018 (Analytics Service for JSON and the Kubernetes Autonomous Operator), Server 6.5 in January 2020 (distributed ACID transactions), Server 6.6 in August 2020 and Server 7.0 in July 2021 (collections/scopes and SQL transactions). Managed cloud offerings followed with Couchbase Cloud GA on AWS in July 2020, the Capella branding on AWS in late 2021, Capella on Google Cloud in June 2022 and on Microsoft Azure in January 2023, followed by Capella Analytics/Columnar in late 2023 and Capella AI Services announced in December 2024. Leadership changed with Bob Wiederhold replacing James Phillips as CEO in 2010, Peter Finter becoming chief marketing officer in September 2016, and Matt Cain replacing Wiederhold as CEO in April 2017. Couchbase completed its initial public offering on July 21, 2021 and traded on Nasdaq under the ticker BASE until the Haveli Investments acquisition closed on September 24, 2025.

Risks & controversies

A $30 million round in March 2016 was reported as a down round at a reduced valuation and was at the time intended to be the company's last private round before an IPO, which did not occur until 2021. Following the 2025 take-private transaction, public disclosure is reduced and post-close ownership percentages are not broadly disclosed, and commentary notes that private-equity ownership raises questions about leverage.
