The YC application· Winter 2014 batch

Alumni Q&A

How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)
The company was co-founded by Sandro, a developer, and Urska, a designer and sculptor. They initially built remote patient monitoring systems for medical clinics, then moved into the consumer market after finding public health systems slow to adopt new technology.
How did you decide to apply to Y Combinator? What was your experience applying, going through the batch, and fundraising at demo day?
The founders won the Pioneers Challenge in 2013, where they met Michael Seibel, who later became an angel investor and encouraged them to apply. They were accepted into the YC 2014 batch as one of few foreign hardware companies, and raised a large portion of their seed round at and shortly after demo day.
How have you kept in touch with the YC community and continued to use YC resources & programs since the batch ended?
The founders stay in contact with their batchmates, other founders, and some European teams, and continue to use YC resources and programs.
What's the history of your company from getting started until the present day? What were the big inflection points?
Bellabeat began focused on women's wellness, joined YC in 2014, and raised a seed round. It launched the Leaf Nature wellness tracker in 2015, added a membership program with personalized guidance in 2019, and released the Ivy wearable in 2021, which gives health guidance based on menstrual cycle and biometric data. Additional products include multiple Leaf editions, the Time smartwatch, and the Spring smart water bottle.
What is the core problem you are solving? Why is this a big problem? What made you decide to work on it?
The founders identified a gap in women's wellness, where women relied on online research, forums, or physician visits but lacked daily biofeedback. They built Ivy alongside personalized programs and cycle input to provide daily insights and guidance tailored to menstrual cycle stages, individual bio-responses, and sensor-tracked lifestyle data.
What is your long-term vision? If you truly succeed, what will be different about the world?
The founders aim to become the leading femtech company by providing personalized guidance through a subscription option, changing how women's cycles and wellness are understood.

Summarized from the founders' answers on their Y Combinator profile.
