Company profile

researched Aug 2026

Babylon Health was a UK-headquartered digital health service provider that connected patients with clinicians through web and mobile applications, combining an artificial-intelligence symptom assessment and triage tool with video and text consultations with doctors, nurses and therapists. Users could submit questions or photos, hold video consultations, order home blood-test kits, book physical examinations at a limited number of London facilities, access activity-tracking and lifestyle tools, and use features branded "Ask Babylon" and "Healthcheck", the latter generating a health report from questions about family history and lifestyle. Clinical records and appointment recordings were retained for patients to review.

The company operated an integrated, digital-first primary care model that it described as value-based, marketed in the US through a platform called Babylon 360, and used remote patient monitoring alongside in-person care delivery. In the UK it ran private subscription and pay-as-you-go services from 2013, distribution via the insurer Bupa, and from November 2017 the NHS-funded GP at Hand practice, an online-first primary care list based around London. Internationally it operated as Babyl in Rwanda, licensed software to Telus Health in Canada, and worked with US partners including Mount Sinai Health Partners, Home State Health and the insurer Centene.

After listing on the NYSE via a SPAC merger in October 2021, Babylon's losses widened relative to revenue. It cut roughly half its workforce in August 2022, lost a take-private deal with MindMaze in 2023, closed its US business, and its US and UK entities entered Chapter 7 bankruptcy and administration respectively in August 2023, with the UK business sold to eMed Healthcare UK Limited and remaining entities wound down.

Founding story

Babylon was founded in 2013 in London by Ali Parsa, a British-Iranian entrepreneur who had previously been an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and CEO of the private hospital operator Circle Health. Parsa's stated aim was to use technology, including artificial intelligence, to make primary care accessible and affordable globally, starting with a mobile app that combined symptom assessment with video consultations with licensed physicians for urban UK users.

Business model

Babylon sold digital-first primary care to consumers, employers, insurers and public health systems. In the UK it charged private subscription and pay-as-you-go fees and was reimbursed by the NHS for its GP at Hand practice; internationally it contracted with governments (a 10-year agreement with Rwanda), insurers and partners such as Prudential, Samsung, Telus, Bupa and Centene, and in the US pursued value-based care arrangements in which it acted as the primary care provider for health plan members. It also licensed its software, as in the 2021 arrangement with Telus after exiting clinical service delivery in Canada.

Revenue came from consumer subscriptions and pay-as-you-go consultations, NHS and government contracts, insurer and enterprise partnerships, value-based care capitation-style arrangements in the US, software licensing, and owned physician networks such as Meritage Medical Network, which had revenues of $400 million in 2022. Reported revenue was $322.9 million in 2021 and approximately $1 billion in 2022, with US operations accounting for 84% of revenue in 2021.

Traction

The company reported around 4,000 clinical consultations a day in 2019 and over 5,000 per day the same year, coverage of more than 20 million people in 2019 and over 24 million users by 2021, and 4.3 million users at the time of its 2019 Series C. Babyl in Rwanda reported 2 million members by May 2018, about 30% of the adult population, and 1 million completed consultations by January 2020. UK GP at Hand had over 100,000 registered NHS patients by August 2021. In the US, Babylon reported more than 100,000 value-based care members and 472% year-over-year revenue growth in the first half of 2021. At the time of the 2023 sale, the preventive healthcare service transferred to eMed served 700,000 patients.

Latest developments

In May 2023 Babylon said it would cede ownership to its main lender Albacore Capital and announced a take-private deal with MindMaze, which collapsed in July/August 2023. Shares were delisted from the NYSE in June 2023 and traded at $0.02 on the OTC market with a market capitalisation of $441,000. The Austin, Texas headquarters closed on 7 August 2023 with 94 layoffs; Babylon Healthcare and Babylon Inc. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in Delaware on 9 August 2023. Administrators from Alvarez & Marsal Europe LLP were appointed over Babylon Group Holdings Limited and Babylon Partners Limited on 30 August 2023, immediately completing a sale of most UK businesses and assets to eMed Healthcare UK Limited for £500,000; remaining Babylon Holdings entities were to be wound down. The UK private and GP at Hand services continued under the eMed brand.

Market position

Babylon was among the most prominent European digital health companies of its era: its January 2016 Series A was described as the largest digital health round in Europe at the time, and its August 2019 Series C was reported as the largest fundraise in the European or US digital health delivery sector. It reached unicorn status at a $2 billion valuation in 2019 and a $4.2 billion valuation on its 2021 SPAC listing, before becoming one of the highest-profile failures among SPAC-listed digital health companies.

Babylon combined an AI symptom checker and triage chatbot with 24/7 remote access to clinicians and, in the US, integrated value-based primary care, positioning itself as digital-first primary care rather than episodic telemedicine. It was one of few digital health companies to operate an NHS-funded GP practice at scale and to sign a national government contract in a low-resource market.

Technology

The platform used machine-learning-based symptom assessment: users entered symptoms which were compared against a database of known conditions to suggest possible matches and a recommended course of action, delivered through a chatbot and the "Ask Babylon" and "Healthcheck" features, alongside video and text consultation infrastructure, secure clinical record storage and remote patient monitoring. AI tools were deployed in the NHS triage pathway and, from 2018, in Rwanda, where the initial system did not cover some locally prevalent diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. Steve Davis served as chief technology officer until 2023.

Go-to-market

Growth came through partnerships and public-sector contracts rather than pure direct-to-consumer sales: NHS commissioning arrangements for GP at Hand in London and Birmingham, a government partnership in Rwanda, insurer and corporate partnerships (Bupa, Prudential, Samsung, Telus, Centene, Mount Sinai Health Partners, Home State Health), and acquisitions of US assets such as Meritage Medical Network, Higi and DayToDay Health to add physician capacity, retail health kiosks and post-surgical care management. NHS England at one point restricted GP at Hand's marketing and registrations.

Consumers seeking remote primary care and triage; NHS patients in London and Birmingham registering with GP at Hand; health plan members in US states including Missouri and California; citizens of Rwanda aged 12 and over via Mutuelle de Santé; and enterprise and insurance partners including Bupa, Prudential, Samsung, Telus and Centene.

Geography

Headquartered in London, with operations that expanded from the UK in 2013 to 17 countries, including Rwanda (from September 2016, as Babyl), Canada (from 2018 with Telus Health, clinical services ended 2021), the United States (North American operations from 2018, all 50 states via Centene, US headquarters in Austin, Texas) and Asia-market ambitions announced in 2019.

History

Founded in 2013, Babylon introduced a subscription model for private healthcare in the UK and registered Babylon Health Services Ltd with the Care Quality Commission in 2014. It raised a $25 million Series A in January 2016 and $60 million in April 2017, launched in Rwanda as Babyl in 2016, and launched the NHS-funded GP at Hand practice in November 2017, expanding it across London boroughs and, in 2019, to Birmingham. A partnership with Telus Health began in September 2018 and North American operations started that year. A $550 million Series C in August 2019 valued the company above $2 billion. Babylon signed a 10-year Rwandan government partnership in March 2020, partnered with Mount Sinai Health Partners in May 2020 and Home State Health in October 2020, acquired Meritage Medical Network in April 2021, and Higi and DayToDay Health in January 2022. It announced a merger with Alkuri Global Acquisition Corp. in June 2021 at a $4.2 billion valuation, completing in October 2021 with an NYSE listing under BBLN. In August 2022 it cut its Birmingham GP at Hand service and made nearly half its workforce redundant. In 2023 shares were delisted from the NYSE, a take-private deal with MindMaze collapsed, the US business closed, and the group entered bankruptcy and administration, with UK assets sold to eMed Healthcare.

Risks & controversies

Babylon's AI faced sustained clinical scrutiny: a 2018 Lancet-commissioned review found no convincing evidence its chatbot outperformed random symptom checkers or matched physician triage accuracy, and validation studies were criticised for relying on multiple-choice exams rather than patient outcomes. A 2018 Forbes investigation, based on current and former staff and outside doctors, reported that the company deployed insufficiently vetted software and exaggerated its effectiveness; Babylon disputed the account. It was also criticised for failing to follow up mental health patients (which it attributed to the NHS referral system) and for discouraging registration of patients with complex care needs at GP at Hand. Clinicians raised concerns about reliance on junior clinicians and algorithmic assessment, and the Rwandan AI launch omitted locally common diseases. Financially, the company reported a $221 million net loss on about $1 billion of 2022 revenue and a $63 million first-quarter 2023 loss; the 2023 insolvency provided no payment to Class A ordinary shareholders or other equity holders, and the Rwanda wind-down was reported as potentially disrupting care for 2.8 million people.
