Market position

Described as one of the preeminent suppliers of enterprise IT networking infrastructure and an early mover in enterprise Wi-Fi, and recognized as a Leader for 19 consecutive years in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Wired and Wireless LAN Infrastructure as of 2025 and in the 2025 IDC MarketScape for Worldwide Enterprise Wireless LAN. It competes in a crowded SD-WAN and security market and historically against incumbent Cisco Systems.

Differentiation rests on converged networking and security in a single architecture (SD-WAN combined with security service edge), a dual-platform AIOps design letting customers operate from either Aruba Central or Juniper Mist without new hardware, cloud-managed operations, and the CX10000 distributed switch with an integrated DPU.

Technology

Aruba pioneered a controller-based wireless LAN architecture that centralized authentication, RF management and traffic optimization on mobility controllers rather than individual access points, complemented by software-driven role-based access control. Current technology spans Wi-Fi 7 access points, the cloud-native Aruba Central management platform, AIOps capabilities, ClearPass policy management, Silver Peak SD-WAN, Axis-derived SSE, Athonet private 5G mobile core, and the CX10000 switch using AMD Pensando DPUs. Juniper AIOps microservices, including a Large Experience Model and Marvis Actions, are being moved into Aruba Central, while AI-based client profiling and Organizational Insight move from Aruba Central into Mist.

Go-to-market

Sales are made through HPE's enterprise channels and its installed base in server and compute infrastructure, with network-as-a-service packaging under GreenLake and cross-selling of private networking solutions (earlier via a partnership with Celona, later through the Athonet-based offering).

Global enterprises and public-sector organizations, with adoption concentrated in education, healthcare, retail and financial services, campus and branch networks, plus data center buyers and operational-technology environments such as manufacturing, transportation and logistics, smart cities, mining and port operations.

History

After raising $9.5 million in Series A funding in January 2003 and winning early enterprise customers in education and healthcare by 2004, Aruba went public on Nasdaq under the ticker ARUN on March 27, 2007, selling 8 million shares at $11 for $88 million in gross proceeds. Revenue grew from $72.5 million in fiscal 2006 to $729 million in fiscal 2014. The company expanded by acquisition, including Network Chemistry (2007), AirWave Wireless (2008), Amigopod assets (2010), Azalea Networks (2010), Avenda Systems (2011) and Meridian Apps (2013). Hewlett-Packard announced its acquisition on March 2, 2015 and closed it on May 19, 2015; from November 1, 2015 Aruba operated as HPE's Intelligent Edge business unit. Later HPE additions attributed to the unit include Rasa Networks (2016), Niara (2017), Cape Networks (2018), Silver Peak (2020), Athonet (2023) and Axis Security (2023). Founder and former CEO Keerti Melkote departed, and Phil Mottram and David Hughes were appointed in 2021. Following HPE's acquisition of Juniper Networks, the Aruba unit sits within HPE Networking under Rami Rahim.

Risks & controversies

As a condition of US Department of Justice approval for HPE's $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks, HPE agreed to divest its Instant On wireless networking business and related patents to a competitor. The DOJ had sued to block the merger on grounds it would leave HPE and Cisco controlling too much of the global networking market, and a group of state attorneys general has intervened in the court case over the settlement. The unit also faces intense competition in the crowded SD-WAN market.
