Umut Gurkan is the Wilbert J. Austin Professor of Engineering at Case Western Reserve University, where he leads the Case Biomanufacturing and Microfabrication Laboratory and holds appointments across departments including Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Orthopedics. He holds a Ph.D. from Purdue University and completed postdoctoral training at Harvard-MIT, and his research focuses on microcirculation, vascular biology, and red blood cell studies, with applications in microfluidic systems and point-of-care diagnostics for blood disorders, infectious diseases, and cancer. Gurkan has authored over 110 publications, holds 18 US patents, founded four biotech companies, and is currently a Visiting Scholar and Fellow at Cambridge Judge Business School.
