About

Neil Shen founded Sequoia Capital China in 2005 and now leads HongShan, the independent firm it became in 2023 and one of Asia's largest venture investors. A co-founder of Ctrip and Home Inns before turning to venture, he backed Meituan, Pinduoduo, and ByteDance, and has ranked first on the Forbes Midas List more times than any other investor.

Beyond investing

Founded
Shen co-founded Ctrip.com (now Trip.com Group), one of China's first online travel booking sites. Shen co-founded Home Inn, a hotel chain, in 2002.

Shen was elected to the 13th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference in January 2018.

Shen received the Tatler Most Influential Hong Kong award. Shen was listed among the '100 Greatest Living Business Minds' by Forbes. Shen was listed on Fortune's '50 Most Influential Business Leaders in China' and '30 Most Influential Investors in China' for the years 2015 to 2022. Shen was named to the 'Top 20 Venture Capitalists Worldwide' by the New York Times and CB Insights from 2016 to 2019.
Family
Shen is married to an investment banker and has two daughters.

Shen speaks Mandarin and English and has some proficiency in Cantonese. Shen grew up in Shanghai and was called a math prodigy at Shanghai No. 2 High School. Shen acquired permanent residency in Singapore, as reported in February 2024.
