Ernest J. Moniz served as the thirteenth US Secretary of Energy from 2013 to January 2017, where he worked on energy technology innovation, nuclear security, and the Iran nuclear agreement. He joined the MIT faculty in 1973, founded the MIT Energy Initiative, and holds the Cecil and Ida Green Professorship of Physics and Engineering Systems (emeritus). He is co-chairman and CEO of the Nuclear Threat Initiative and CEO of the Energy Futures Initiative, holding a BS in physics from Boston College and a PhD in theoretical physics from Stanford University.
