What is a VC scout?

A scout is an individual — usually a founder or operator — who invests a venture firm's money in small early checks, sharing the upside with the firm. Scout programs extend a firm's reach into networks its partners cannot cover.

For founders, scout money is fast, founder-friendly capital with a large firm's brand adjacent to it; the ambiguity worth clarifying is whether the check implies anything about the firm's future interest.
