What is an angel investor?

An angel is an individual investing personal money in startups, typically at the earliest stages with checks from a few thousand to a few hundred thousand dollars. Operator-angels — founders and executives investing their winnings — dominate the modern angel market.

Angels move fast, decide alone, and often add specific help (hiring, customers, the next round's intros). US securities rules generally require angels in private placements to be accredited investors.
