TruEra was founded in early 2019 by Anupam Datta, Shayak Sen, and Will Uppington. Datta and Sen's collaboration began in 2014 at Carnegie Mellon University, where Datta was a professor of Electrical & Computer Engineering and Computer Science and Sen was his PhD student, doing foundational research on AI/ML explainability. Uppington came from an enterprise software/product background (prior roles reported include Boston Consulting Group and product leadership at enterprise ML/algorithmic software companies) and had personally experienced the 'black box' problem of selling ML-powered software to enterprises. The three came together to build a 'Model Intelligence' platform aimed at closing what they called the 'AI trust gap' -- the lack of confidence enterprises, regulators, and business stakeholders have in opaque ML models.

TruEra emerged from stealth on August 3, 2020, launching its Model Intelligence platform (built on proprietary 'AI.Q' explainability technology) alongside a $5.1M first-round (seed) financing led by Greylock Partners (Jerry Chen), with participation from Wing Venture Capital, Conversion Capital, and angel investor Aaref Hilaly. Early customers included Standard Chartered Bank. The company raised a $12M Series A in December 2020 led by Wing Venture Capital (with Greylock continuing to participate), during which period the company reported over 5x revenue growth. In March 2022, TruEra announced a $25M Series B led by Menlo Ventures (whose partner and former Splunk CTO Tim Tully joined the board), with participation from existing investors Greylock Partners, Wing Venture Capital, Harpoon Ventures, Conversion Capital, and the Data Community Fund, plus new investors Forgepoint Capital and B Capital Group's Ascent Fund -- bringing total funding to $42.3M. Customers cited around this time included Standard Chartered, HarperCollins, and Belcorp.

As generative AI and LLMs took off in 2023, TruEra expanded from predictive-ML monitoring into LLM Evaluation and Observability, launching the open-source TruLens library (introducing the 'RAG Triad' evaluation methodology) alongside a commercial LLM Observability product; TruLens was adopted by thousands of developers. The company achieved SOC 2 Type II certification in October 2023 and was cited in 26 Gartner reports that year. Its customer roster expanded to include AES, Zurich Insurance, Haystaq, Equinix, Union Bank, and KBC, among other Fortune/Global 500 enterprises.
