Alumni Q&A
- How did your company get started? (i.e., How did the founders meet? How did you come up with the idea? How did you decide to be a founder?)
- The founders are brothers who grew up in the Caribbean, taught themselves calculus from MIT OpenCourseWare at age 12, and published graduate-level math by 16. They started Thesis after concluding that no agentic tool existed for autonomous computational work across fields such as science, AI, and finance.
- How did you decide to apply to Y Combinator? What was your experience applying, going through the batch, and fundraising at demo day?
- One founder, Sergio, applied while working at Google X, having previously done AI R&D at Google X, Nvidia, and Stanford's AI Lab, where he repeatedly noticed that researchers lacked the tooling available to software engineers. His brother Luigi, who had been scaling a prior company handling cross-border payments, joined to work on the idea together.
- What is the core problem you are solving? Why is this a big problem? What made you decide to work on it?
- The founders identify that computational science relies on tools built before AI, and that current coding agents can write code but do not understand the underlying data, leaving researchers with manual and error-prone work. Thesis addresses this with data-aware AI agents inside the scientific environment that monitor experiments, analyze results, review literature, and run background workflows.
- What is your long-term vision? If you truly succeed, what will be different about the world?
- The founders' long-term goal is for Thesis to autonomously discover new knowledge by generating ideas, running experiments, interpreting results, and iterating, positioning it as infrastructure for scientific breakthroughs in areas like materials and energy.
