A declarative schema/contract file drives type-safe client generation, migrations and the data layer; the newer generation of the ORM ("Prisma Next") is a rewrite in native TypeScript with a minimal core and a public SPI so that capabilities including Postgres support itself are implemented as extensions. Existing extensions cover pgvector similarity search, ParadeDB BM25 full-text indexes, PostGIS geospatial types and CipherStash searchable encryption. Prisma Postgres runs on unikernel microVMs on bare metal targeting single-digit millisecond boot times, and Prisma Compute runs Bun on bare metal co-located with the database.

History

Prisma began as an open-source project and grew into the most downloaded ORM in the Node.js ecosystem.
