History

Founded in 2016 as AISense, the company announced a partnership with Zoom Video Communications in January 2018 to transcribe video meetings post-conference and debuted its first Otter speech transcription app at Mobile World Congress in March 2018, available free on Android and Apple mobile devices. A premium tier at $10 per month arrived with the Otter Live launch in September 2018, and Otter for Education, a note-taking tool for college students, launched in October 2018. Otter for Teams, aimed at enterprises, launched in March 2019. In January 2020, now operating as Otter.ai, the company raised a $10 million round led by NTT Docomo's Docomo Ventures and established a multi-tier pricing structure; in April 2020 it introduced Live Notes for Zoom calls. Risks & controversies

Otter.ai has drawn recurring privacy scrutiny. In March 2018 ZDNet reported issues with its privacy policy regarding company access to uploaded recordings and transcriptions; Otter.ai then updated the policy, saying only its CTO would authorize access and only for legitimate user requests. The University of Massachusetts banned the software on the basis that it conflicts with the state's all-party consent recording requirement, and users have complained that Otter joined meetings unasked when linked to a calendar. In 2022 Politico raised concerns after the company sent journalist Phelim Kine an unusual survey referencing the title of an interview with a Uyghur human rights advocate; Otter.ai first confirmed then retracted the survey's legitimacy. A 2025 class-action lawsuit in the Northern District of California (No. 5:25-cv-06911) alleges the company records conversations without permission for use as AI training data, with claims under ECPA, CIPA, CFAA and Illinois BIPA, including allegations that OtterPilot joined Zoom meetings without participant knowledge, that voiceprints were collected without written consent, that auto-join was enabled by default, and that default configuration does not notify non-users.
