Instant

Instant is a backend platform for application developers, positioned as a backend for AI-assisted ("AI-coded") app development. It bundles a real-time database with authentication, a permissions system, file storage, presence and broadcast, and data streams, so that client-side code can read and write persisted data directly. A representative usage pattern is a React application that calls init() with an app ID, reads data with db.useQuery() and writes with db.transact(), with updates propagating in real time, working across multiple clients, and functioning offline.

The product is designed to be operated from the command line rather than a dashboard, so that coding agents can perform the same operations a human would: creating an account, provisioning a database, pushing a declarative schema (defined with i.schema and i.entity) and pushing declarative permission rules. Instant emphasizes a small API surface intended to be easy for large language models to generate against, end-to-end TypeScript types covering schema, permissions, queries and transactions, and built-in undo for destructive operations such as schema and column deletions. Its permission model is described as drawing on Google's Zanzibar and Facebook's EntPrivacy, using allow rules for view/create/update/delete together with named bindings such as an isOwner check comparing auth.id to a record's creator. Built-in authentication methods include magic-code email plus Sign in with Google, Apple, GitHub and LinkedIn, and payments can be added via Stripe for one-time purchases, subscriptions and usage-based billing.

As of the material reviewed, the company has announced that Instant is sunsetting, with services stated to continue until August 31, 2027.

Business model

Instant provides a hosted backend service that developers integrate into client applications through official SDKs (for example @instantdb/react and @instantdb/core) and a command-line tool (instant-cli) used to create accounts, provision databases and push schema and permission files. The platform bundles services that developers would otherwise assemble separately — authentication, permissions, file storage, presence/broadcast, streams and payments integration — into a single backend.
