Company profile
researched Aug 2026Hound Labs, Inc., now branded Hound Diagnostics, was founded in Oakland in 2014 by emergency physician, reserve sheriff's deputy and former life-sciences venture capitalist Dr. Mike Lynn; marketing executive Jenny Lynn; and technical co-founder Kuni Oh. Lynn conceived the company after observing suspected cannabis-impaired driving while cycling and encountering the limitations of legacy toxicology in emergency medicine and law enforcement. Conventional urine, hair, blood and oral-fluid tests can show prior exposure long after psychoactive effects have subsided; the founders sought an alcohol-breathalyzer-like way to isolate very recent cannabis use. The technical challenge is extreme: exhaled delta-9-THC occurs at concentrations orders of magnitude below breath alcohol amid thousands of other compounds. Hound developed proprietary sample collection, cartridges, assay chemistry, instrumentation and analysis intended to detect active THC in breath during a roughly two-to-three-hour window. It built and tested dozens of prototypes with academic/clinical collaborators including UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital and UC Berkeley-affiliated researchers. A 2019 peer-reviewed Clinical Chemistry paper led by UCSF's Kara Lynch showed THC could be detected in breath across a three-hour period after smoking; that supports recent-use detection, not a universal concentration-to-impairment threshold. This distinction is essential: the product indicates recent cannabis use and expressly does not measure whether or how much a person is impaired. There is no nationally accepted cannabis breath per-se limit analogous to 0.08% blood alcohol, impairment varies with dose, route, tolerance and time, and the initial commercial positioning is workplace safety rather than evidentiary roadside conviction. Benchmark led an $8.1 million Series B in May 2017 and partner Mitch Lasky joined the board; television producer Dick Wolf, an early individual investor, also became a director. Intrinsic Capital Partners led a $30 million Series D in August 2019 with NFP Ventures, Main Street Advisors, Icon Ventures and Benchmark. Entourage Effect Capital led a $20 million September 2021 financing with Intrinsic, Benchmark, Icon and new investor Tuatara Capital. The three public announced equity rounds total $58.1 million, but contemporaneous reporting said $34 million had already been raised before the 2019 Series D, and co-founder Mike Lynn says he raised more than $100 million of equity and debt and built a 95-person team. Private databases report totals from roughly $96 million to $108 million. Those differences reflect undisclosed early equity, Form D amendments/floors and later venture debt, including a Horizon Technology Finance loan visible in the lender's SEC portfolio. The profile therefore records $100 million as a conservative approximate lifetime equity/debt floor, preserves only non-overlapping public round amounts, and leaves exact proceeds/cap table unresolved rather than treating the four raw Form Ds totaling $49.2 million as complete. Hound repeatedly projected launches in 2017, 2019, 2021 and early 2022 before commercial shipment in October 2023. That long delay reflects assay sensitivity, hardware/manufacturing, clinical validation, workflow and regulatory/market complexity. The shipped Hound Cannabis Breathalyzer Collect + Send version automated tamper-evident breath collection on site but sent cartridges for laboratory analysis; an on-site analyzer version remained in development. Hound also announced Quest Diagnostics as exclusive confirmatory-laboratory provider in 2022, using highly sensitive mass spectrometry at Quest's Lenexa, Kansas laboratory for positive breath results. By 2026 the company had rebranded Hound Diagnostics, moved from a single cannabis device toward an integrated employer testing platform and replaced founder leadership. Sam Kabbani, a medical-laboratory executive with assay, toxicology and medical-device experience, is CEO; Kathy Henderson is COO/CFO; and John Jellinek is board chair. Mike Lynn is described publicly as former CEO/board chair, while Jenny Lynn's current role is not disclosed. The current platform includes Hound Breathalyzer for recent cannabis use; Hound Screens customizable oral-fluid and urine panels covering up to 19 substances; Hound Chart, a claimed HIPAA-compliant cloud system for real-time results, QR-linked workflows, laboratory uploads and audit-ready records; and Hound Check integrated pre-employment background screening. The company claims complete screening results in under one hour and on-site operation without external labs for the current platform, but its exact analyzer configuration, confirmation rules and availability by test/analyte need contract-level verification because the 2023 commercial Collect + Send product did require laboratory processing. Customers use the system for pre-employment, random, post-incident, reasonable-suspicion and return-to-duty testing. The business likely combines placement/sale or lease of instruments with recurring single-use cartridges/consumables, per-test panels, software/workflow subscriptions, confirmation services and background-screening fees; current prices are quote-only. Target sectors include construction, transportation/logistics not governed by federal testing rules, manufacturing, utilities, warehousing, retail, insurance and other safety-sensitive employers. Hound partnered with Avetta to reach supply-chain companies and with Quest for confirmation. Critical market limits remain. The 2021 company disclaimer said the device was not for federal drug-testing programs administered by SAMHSA, the Department of Transportation or the U.S. military, nor for medical/therapeutic use. Employers face a patchwork of state and municipal cannabis/off-duty-conduct, disability, privacy, notice, confirmatory-testing and adverse-action laws. A recent-use positive is not proof of impairment, causation or policy violation. False positives/negatives, specimen contamination, collection error, cutoffs, cross-reactivity, software identity mismatch, confirmation delay and chain-of-custody flaws can affect employment or legal outcomes. The shortest detection window may improve fairness for off-duty users but can miss use outside the window or after oral consumption with different kinetics. Company sensitivity/specificity and timing claims require independent peer-reviewed replication across smoking, vaping, edibles, potency, frequent/chronic users, sex/age/body composition and real-world workplaces. The California Research Advisory Panel's 2025 report lists an ongoing Hound Labs study evaluating on-demand breathalyzer performance, showing validation continues after launch. The broader product expansion introduces additional competitors and compliance obligations: Quest Diagnostics, Labcorp, Abbott/Alere, OraSure/Intercept, DISA/Global HR Research, eScreen, Psychemedics and local occupational-health/testing firms; cannabis-specific rivals include Cannabix Technologies, Gaize and impairment-assessment approaches such as DRUID. Hound's moat is patented ultra-sensitive breath collection/detection, a deliberately narrow recent-use claim, accumulated human data and integrated workflow. Its risks are capital intensity, consumables economics, slow adoption, procurement/union acceptance, missing federal authorization, evolving cannabis law, scientific controversy over use versus impairment, hardware yield/reliability, dependence on sensitive laboratory/instrument operations, privacy/security of employee toxicology and background-check data, and dilution/debt after more than $100 million of financing. No material company-specific enforcement, recall, confirmed breach or adjudicated product-liability case was identified in manual review, but that negative search does not substitute for litigation, quality-system, clinical and security diligence.
Founding story
Mike Lynn's combined ER, law-enforcement and life-sciences investing experience exposed the gap between long-lived cannabis metabolites and actual recent use. He, Jenny Lynn and Kuni Oh founded Hound Labs to detect the tiny amount of active THC in breath during the few hours most relevant to safety decisions.
Business model
B2B workplace diagnostics platform combining proprietary analyzer/sample-collection hardware, recurring test consumables, customizable drug panels, results/workflow software, confirmation services and background screening.
Quote-based equipment placement/sale or lease; recurring cartridges and per-test fees; multi-analyte screening and confirmation charges; Hound Chart software/workflow; background-check fees and enterprise service contracts.
Traction
Benchmark-backed since 2017; human/field studies and 2019 peer-reviewed breath-detection publication; 95-person historical team and >$100m equity/debt per co-founder; Quest confirmation agreement 2022; first commercial cannabis breath tests shipped October 2023; active hiring and expanded four-product Hound Diagnostics platform in 2026. Customer counts/revenue undisclosed.
Latest developments
By August 2026 Hound Diagnostics markets an on-site, under-one-hour integrated system: Hound Breathalyzer, Hound Screens for 19 substances, Hound Chart and Hound Check. Sam Kabbani is CEO, Kathy Henderson COO/CFO and John Jellinek board chair. Active quality/manufacturing hiring suggests continued product scale-up.

Exact cap table and debt outstanding are private.
Risks & controversies
Recent use is not impairment; no universal THC breath impairment threshold. Detection varies by route, potency, chronic use and biology. Product claims need larger independent validation and real-world sensitivity/specificity/cutoff evidence. Repeated multi-year launch delays, hardware/assay manufacturing, quality and consumables costs create execution risk. Workplace testing laws vary; adverse employment decisions can create privacy, disability, labor, discrimination and wrongful-termination exposure. The product was expressly excluded from SAMHSA/DOT/military federal programs and medical use. Chain of custody, false results, confirmation, result security and FCRA/background-check compliance are critical. Hound Chart holds highly sensitive employee health/toxicology/identity data. Incumbent labs bundle testing; cannabis-law reform can either expand fair-testing demand or reduce employer testing. More than $100m of equity/debt implies dilution, cash needs and lender pressure. No material enforcement/recall/breach found in manual public review.
