Bowery

Bowery Farming, Inc. was a New York-based vertical farming and digital agriculture company that grew and delivered pesticide-free lettuce, leafy greens and herbs from indoor farms located near cities in New Jersey, Maryland and Pennsylvania. The company converted industrial warehouses into smart farms where crops were stacked vertically and grown hydroponically under LEDs with controlled air conditions, using a closed-loop water system. It described its indoor farms as capable of yielding up to 100 times more produce than outdoor operations in the same footprint, growing year-round without pesticides or GMOs.

Operations were coordinated by BoweryOS, a proprietary farm operating system that used networks of sensors and cameras, automation, robotics and AI to monitor plant health, adjust each crop's climate, signal harvest timing and record a traceable seed-to-store history that could be applied across multiple farms. Seed selection emphasized non-GMO varieties chosen for flavor rather than drought or pest resistance, with named products including basil, arugula, crispy leaf, mustard frills, bok choy and baby romaine.

At the time its website was published, Bowery listed a Manhattan headquarters, a Kearny, New Jersey research and development center (its first farm), a second farm in Kearny serving New Jersey, Connecticut and New York, and a Nottingham, Maryland farm serving Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C. Wikipedia describes the company as having operated three commercial farms and two R&D facilities. The company ceased operations in November 2024.
