Market position

Beeper is described by The Verge as an upstart unified-messaging app whose main and possibly only direct competitor was Texts, which Automattic acquired for $50 million in October 2023 before acquiring Beeper in April 2024 and merging the two teams onto Beeper. Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg has framed messaging as a next major pillar for the company alongside WordPress and WooCommerce. Beeper positions itself against siloed chat networks by open-sourcing the privacy-critical parts of its stack and allowing users to self-host bridges, and by building on the open Matrix protocol rather than a proprietary backend. It contributes financially to the Matrix project, upstreams fixes, and runs a bounty program sponsoring open-source Matrix bridges. Its on-device connection model is presented as preserving end-to-end encryption and keeping message content off company servers, a response to criticism that earlier server-side bridging weakened security.

Technology

Beeper is built on Matrix, an open-source decentralized chat protocol; Beeper accounts also gain access to the Matrix network. Connections to third-party networks are implemented as Matrix bridges, most of which are open-sourced under the mautrix and beeper GitHub organizations (whatsapp, telegram, meta for Facebook/Instagram, signal, twitter, discord, slack, linkedin, gmessages, googlechat, android-sms, heisenbridge for IRC, groupme, platform-imessage, line, teams, tumblr-dms and others). Bridges are written largely in Go, with additional Python, Swift and TypeScript components, and Beeper runs a customized fork of the Synapse Matrix homeserver. Users can self-host bridges using Beeper's bridge-manager tool. Beeper Desktop exposes a built-in API and MCP server with SDKs across several languages. On-device connections keep chat history off Beeper servers; cloud-based connections use zero-access encryption with a user-held recovery code.

Go-to-market

Direct-to-consumer distribution through the Apple App Store, Google Play and desktop downloads from beeper.com, with a free tier converting to paid subscriptions. Prior to the Automattic acquisition, access was gated by a waitlist that had reached 450,000 people; the app was opened to everyone across platforms at the time of the acquisition announcement. Beeper also cultivates a developer and open-source community via GitHub, a bridge bounty program, and a Desktop API with multi-language SDKs, and solicits partnership discussions with the platforms it integrates with.

Individual consumers who use multiple chat networks, including power users who manage many accounts (for example multiple brand accounts) and users seeking to reduce time spent inside social media apps while retaining direct messaging access. The FAQ and pricing tiers are oriented to people connecting between 5 and unlimited accounts.

History

Founded in 2020 and part of Y Combinator's Summer 2021 batch, Beeper built a Matrix-based unified chat client. In December 2023 it launched Beeper Mini, which reverse-engineered iMessage to give Android users blue-bubble messaging; Apple objected, the two sides engaged in a period of blocking and workarounds, and Beeper eventually abandoned the effort. The episode was subsequently cited in the antitrust complaint against Apple. In October 2023 Automattic, an early investor in Beeper, acquired competitor Texts for $50 million. On April 9, 2024 Automattic announced its acquisition of Beeper, a deal that had closed the previous week; Beeper simultaneously ended its waitlist and opened the app to all users. Migicovsky became Automattic's head of messaging and the Texts and Beeper teams were combined to work on Beeper. Beeper has since shipped a redesigned generation of apps built around On-Device Connections and the Beeper Plus subscription tiers.

Risks & controversies

Beeper's model depends on connecting to chat networks it has no affiliation with or endorsement from, and the company acknowledges this on its own site. Its Beeper Mini iMessage product drew direct opposition from Apple in December 2023, leading to a period of blocking and eventual abandonment of the effort; that dispute later appeared in the antitrust complaint against Apple. Automattic CEO Matt Mullenweg publicly criticized Beeper's earlier security model, which required storing and decrypting some messages, and predicted that large platforms would use security arguments to shut such services down; Beeper subsequently changed its architecture so that it cannot see unencrypted messages from Signal, WhatsApp and other encrypted networks. Some features, such as video calls, still require opening the native app, and feature availability varies by network. iMessage support is no longer available in the iOS app according to user reviews.
