One of Silicon Valley's earliest venture capitalists, he began investing in 1962 by co-founding Draper & Johnson with Bill Draper, then founded Asset Management Company in 1965. He later helped establish the biotechnology industry, co-founding Amgen (Applied Molecular Genetics) in 1980.
