Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft with Bill Gates in 1975, wrote the Altair BASIC interpreter that started the company, and left in 1983 after a Hodgkin's lymphoma diagnosis while retaining a stake that made him a lifelong billionaire. He founded Vulcan Inc. to manage his investments and philanthropy, funded SpaceShipOne — the first privately built craft to reach space — and the Allen Institute for Brain Science and AI2. He died in 2018.
