Michael L. Shuler is President of Hesperos, Inc. and the Eckert Professor of Engineering (Emeritus) at Cornell University, with work spanning biochemical engineering, bioprocesses for producing drugs and chemicals from living cells, and multi-organ systems for predicting the body's response to drugs and environmental chemicals. He was the first to describe and patent a "Body-on-a-Chip" system in 2001 and holds subsequent patents on related improvements, including pumpless and unidirectional-flow designs that underlie Hesperos's services. He earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota (1973) and a B.S. from the University of Notre Dame (1969), was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (1989) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1996), and has published over 345 peer-reviewed journal articles.
